Dear Balmat Family,
I was and am so sorry to hear of your loss. I knew WIllow from Schnecksville Elementary School where I work as an aide. I always found WIllow to be a warm and funny girl. She marched to her own drummer and I appreciated the beat. She was extremely creative and comfortable in her skin. I always thought she was so aptly named because she was lithe as a willow and could bend in the wind without breaking. She was always so mellow and even tempered.
I cannot imagine the sadness and sorrow that you are going through but may your memories of Willow be of some comfort. I offer you my sincerest sympathy.

When I heard this news, I was shocked beyond words. Although it had been a year or two since I'd seen Willow, I was always hoping I would run into her again. We were good friends in middle school...she was quirky and fun, and I truly found her a kindred spirit. I'll never forget the little "novel" we wrote together in sixth grade--we even stayed inside when the entire school was watching "Pie in the Face" to write it and almost got in trouble for laughing so hard! She was the only one I could talk to about ANYTHING--things I wouldn't talk about to anyone else, like wacky stories in the news, poetry, art, and books. She was never afraid to go her own way, and I respected her immensely for that.
I can barely imagine what her family is going through right now...to her parents and siblings, my heart and prayers go out to you. Although her life was cut short, please know that she made a huge impact while she was here...I still often think of her and the influence she had on everyone around her, especially me.
God bless.

I first met Willow thru my son. They were in the same class together in grade school. We had just moved to the area and I remember my son telling me about this neat little girl named Willow. I finally did meet her...and I thought she was terrific. I
I would see her every now and then in the neighborhood and she always made pleasant chit chat with me. She always left me smiling after our talks.
All I can say is that I always thought she was a very special and unique person. I am very saddened by her no longer being with us. I am certain she is with God.

I met Willow one morning when she crashed into me and went "oops" and continued on her way. This was two years ago. She was a wonderful person with a beautiful outlook on all things fun and happy. She put a smile on my face so many mornings, and stole my cranberry juice. I'm so sorry for your loss. Her beauty of mind and soul will be carried on in our hearts.

I am extremely saddened by the news of Willow's passing. I was one of her sixth grade teachers at OMS. Willow was a charming young lady and I remember her very well. As one would say, she made her way into my heart As a teacher you hope to hear about the great things your students have accomplished after they leave your class. I am in shock to hear this sad news. Willow will always remain in my memories as a beautiful girl that I had an opportunity to have in my class. She was a special person. My heart and prayers go out to all of her family members. She will be greatly missed.

To say that I am stunned to hear of Willow's passing is an understatement. As her sixth grade teacher at OMS, I remember her as a budding artist creating the most breath-taking images. While she was in high school, I even recall seeing one of her high school pictures hanging in the administraion building, and thought to myself, "Wow, she is really going places!" This, however, is not the place I imagined life taking her and my heart is saddened.

One day, at OMS, I met this great 6th grader named Willow. I knew that from the time she was in 6th grade, until the time she graduated, I could always count on her for a warm smile and kind words. We are so saddened by your loss and heartache. Although we may not know why Willow had to leave us so soon, we hope you'll find comfort knowing that she has moved on to the big adventure. She now knows the secret that the rest of us spend our lives speculating about, and it must be glorious.

One less fair-haired child with an impish smile in the 'Ville... a hole that creates an ache in your hearts and a lump in the throat. Yet her spirit lives somehow in part and parcel of all whom she has known. Your neighbors and friends are here to give you strength to make it through these earthly trials. This strength comes in varied forms... words, silence, looks, gestures, hugs, pats or symbolic donations. Please accept it as it helps ease the loss. Respecting your privacy at this time, we wish you well. We will miss her strolling on Hilton Rd. Indeed you're in our scattered prayers and thoughts. Carol, Dan, Danielle, Dana, David and Anthony.

The Willow I will always remember was a wisp of a child, a tiny little thing with a squeaky voice. I could always hear her coming before I could see her, because she sang as she walked, "Oh My Darlin', Oh My Darlin', Oh My Darlin', What's your Name"...
On an early summer morn as I opened the door to get the paper, she was sitting on my front porch bench. I'd say, "What's up Willow" grumpily, and she would happily reply, "I AM!"...
Willow was always full of sage advice. She appeared one day and found me scowling at the weeds in my garden. With her hands on her hips, she thought for a minute then said to me, "If you just see them as flowers, you'll be happy!". I saw weeds, and Willow saw flowers, as she introduced me that day to (as she would say), "Longolonium Langalingus"...
We shared cookies and sang duets to "You are my Sunshine". Willow was on this earth for such a short time, but I am so thankful and happy to have known her. She taught me to see the beauty in a weed and to rejoice in a new day, and for that I am, and will always be forever grateful.

Dear Pete, Beth, Jasmine, and Nigel,
I am so saddened by your loss.
Once upon a time--maybe and hopefully you remember--Willow was a part of my close circle of friends. We called ourselves the Tiki5, and it was exclusive and giggly as all young groups of friends were. I always remember Willow as making me laugh with her wit and unique sense of humor. Not to mention, she was a fantastic artist and word-smith.
It's very strange to reminisce because I had just been looking through old school notebooks the week prior. I found some pictures she'd drawn for me in crayon, and some in ink. (Most of which were from our various classes together--we happened to share the gift of being compulsive doodlers.)
I remember cherries were her emblem, a shark fin was her symbol, and her color was yellow. And, the summer before freshman year of high school, we had a birthday party for her; it was a hot, moonless night and we decided to take a walk. But with our shirts off. A car came by, and we freaked out and hid behind a tree. The car looked like it was turning, and I said jokingly, "Wouldn't it be funny if that car turned around?" It did. And we hid again, and then it turned around and came back *yet another* time. After that, we ran, hearts pounding deafeningly, through the woods and back to her house. Then, we laid out in the middle of someone's driveway and looked at Mars in the blank night sky. We watched the Rocky Horror Picture Show and made purses out of duct tape. The next morning, we took candles out to the little hut in the yard and played with the Ouija board. We asked it regular, silly 14-year-old-girl questions, but the one thing I do remember is that we asked, "Will the Tiki5 be together forever?"
It had responded, on its frank wooden-and-ink mouth, "Yes." I will never forget that day.
Though our formerly tight circle of friends has grown apart, there is a saying that still strikes me particularly. It's from a page that Chelsea (the clover-leaf Tiki) wrote to me and to all of our friends before she moved to Ohio. It said, "Tikis together/ Never apart/ Maybe in distance/ But never/ In heart."
And it's true--I still feel the same sisterly bond even years after I'd seen Willow last. I will always remember her maturity, her adventurousness, the way we would always end up in the same homeroom because of our last names. I have been blessed to know such a wonderful person, and I only wish I could have gotten to know her as well as you.
May she rest in peace.
Love,
Jen

Pete. Beth, Jamine, Nigel and family,
When Willow was growing up, I remember one particular family party I found Willow alone in her room. I knocked and she invited me in. She was practicing her instrument and welcomed the company. We had alot of fun playing with her furbee. The fact that I was so intriqued by mr. furbee and his verbage humored her, and we laughed and laughed. I have never forgotten that day and it will live on in my memories of this very special girl.
I cannot even fathom this loss and my heart, soul and love are with you all. Please know that Willow's spirit has touched this earth and it will remain here forever. A new techinicolor angel with two different colored socks is watching over us.

My sincerest condolences to the Balmat family. Words cannot define the spirit of Willow, but she was a glowing, intelligent, and hipster-cool young woman. For those who knew her well, her personality was evocative and fun. I will always have fond memories of her time spent in my class. I especially enjoyed trading book interests and talking music and art with her. One of my biggest musical regrets is not taking Willow up on a Radiohead concert offer, in which she landed front row seats.
I still have hanging in my classroom the Andy Warhol gift bag that she gave me as a present, and it will remain in PHS B207 for the remainder of my career. Although this is tremendous loss, Willow's memory will persevere in our lives, like a candle, showing us a path to live deliberately, the way she did.
