Donna Farmer Obituary

Donna Ann Farmer

Donna Ann Farmer, 63, known to many as "Maw Maw Farmer," passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, with her children at her side. For those of you who had the pleasure of knowing Maw Maw Farmer, writing this obituary is not something she would have been fond of, and I can hear her voice saying, "make sure you do this right!" So, I will write a tribute that shares her Life Story.

Donna was born in McDowell County, the daughter of the late Jack Dewitt and Barbara Ruth Hunt Young. Jack was in the U.S. Air Force, and as military kids will say, she was an U.S. Air Force "brat" — she spent the majority of her youth traveling all over the United States, and abroad from Germany to Spain, and she even has a little piece of the fallen Berlin wall. Donna graduated from Crest High School, and throughout her life earned degrees in Art, Horticulture and Psychology from Western Piedmont Community College. After high school Donna met the love of her life, David, while driving down the interstate. True to who Donna was, she hassled David by giving him her cousins' phone number and made him work to find her. As fate would have it David found her and the rest is history. David was the love of Donna's life and they didn't make a big deal about anniversaries, however the unique love expression they exchanged to each other was, "I loved you then, I loved you still, I love you now and always will."

Through the years with the Softball Community, Donna established many friends—there are far too many to name in this life story!

As with all stories, they come to an end... Donna's candle burned out on the 17th of January, but her memories, her love and laughter are with us forever. Maw Maw Farmer had a tough side to her. With that said if she liked you, instantly you were family. Donna loved her family; she raised her two children, Michael and Alysha to be centered with God and Family. One of the bright spots in Donna's life was her grandchildren. She was engaged and spent her years actively raising them. Her first grandchild, Brookelynn, gave her great pride. Next was Shawn. While he was a little quieter than his sister, he looked after his grandmother and they had a great bond. She helped get the kids to and from school, to softball practices and weekend tournaments, and to karate or track for Shawn.

If you were to describe Donna, it would be easy to say that she was hard on the exterior, but underneath was a kind, loving wife, mother and grandmother who wanted to give her family the best that she could. If you were an umpire and didn't bring your "A" game, well she would help you find it and help you find it quick. If not, oh lawdy! For those of you who know, well you know!

Donna was a true matriarch. She pulled everything together and "just made it work." Donna wanted to make this world a better place—she left it with love in her heart, peace, and a tremendous legacy that will live through her kids, grandkids and all of those whom she came to know.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held in memory of Donna at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 29, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 205 Bethel Church Rd., in Marion, with Pastor Jimmy Upton and Pastor Frankie Creel officiating.

Maw Maw Farmer would want everyone to continue her legacy by volunteering and extending kindness or help to others who are in need. The family never says goodbye: "We will see you later Maw Maw…we love you and will see you on the other side!"
