April 10, 1939 - August 28, 2021
Genell Whitson, 82, of Swannanoa, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, at Autumn Care of Marion.
Genell was born April 10, 1939, in Yancey County, to the late Hassie and Macie Honeycutt Whitson.
She graduated from Glenwood High School, and went on to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 39 years until her retirement in 1998. Genell was very independent but a loving, caring soul. She enjoyed traveling and working in her flower garden.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Judith "Judy" Whitson; and her niece, Angela "Genell" Whitson.
Those left behind to cherish Genell's memory are her two brothers, Edwin Michael Whitson (Violet) of Marion, and Charles Clell Whitson of Burnsville; a number of nieces and nephews; great-nieces and -nephews; and a special friend, Arthur Cameron.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 31, in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion. A funeral service to celebrate Genell's life will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery.
The Whitson family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Autumn Care of Marion for the exceptional love and care shown to Genell and her family during her time with them.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Genell's memory are asked to consider the Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 4600 Park Rd. Ste. 250, Charlotte, NC 28209.
