Doreen Guest-Riggle Obituary

Doreen Guest-Riggle
September 26, 1931 ~ August 6, 2017
Doreen Guest-Riggle, age 85, a native of Hayward, CA, long time resident of Atwater, CA and Madera, CA passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017. After a career of almost 40 years with Merced Union High School District, she retired and spent more time doing the things she loved. A lover of travel and games, if you were ever in the mood to jump in an RV or onto an airplane for an adventure…or just sit and play bridge or Rummikub, she was the one to call! Doreen also enjoyed reading, knitting, and was a member of the Atwater United Methodist Church. Throughout her life she was involved in a variety of community activities and organizations, but what was most important to her was family.
Doreen was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Don Guest, son Tim Guest, and 2 brothers, Eldon and Marvin Hansen.
She is survived by her 2 sons: Steve Guest (Susan) and their children Shaun and Stephanie of Concord, CA and Michael Guest (John Kaspar) of Windsor, CT. 1 daughter: Debi Guest-Bray and her children Marissa and Clint of Madera, CA. 1 daughter-in-law: Karen Guest and her sons Nick and Jake of Santa Cruz, CA. 1 brother: Danny Hansen (Gloria) of Lake Don Pedro, CA. 2 sisters-in-law: Beth Hansen of Walnut Creek, CA and Glenda Hansen of Kerman, CA and 2 great-grandchildren: Sawyer and Briar. Doreen is also survived by her nephews and nieces and her extended family: Mari Gill and her children Ashton and Kylie and Emi Weeks. She was also pre-deceased in death by husbands, Claire Hopkins and Roger Riggle.
Memorial services will be on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11:00 am at Atwater United Methodist Church, 2550 Linden Street, Atwater, CA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to honor Doreen's former grandniece through the Kayla Bernardi Bee Positive Foundation c/o Stanislaus Community Foundation, 1029 16th Street, Modesto, CA 95354 or to another one of her favorite charities; the Wheel Chair Foundation c/o Madera Sunrise Rotary, 21475 Road 24, Madera, CA 93638.

I had the privilege to work with Doreen for at least 25 years before she retired and have enjoyed seeing her at our lunches after retirement hearing about her travels. I will remember Doreen as always happy and looking forward to her next adventure. I will miss her smiling face and giving me the heads up on the next big estate sale. She will truly be missed by a lot of people. I am sorry for your loss.

Doreena classy lady that I met over 40 years ago. She was my first secretary at the Merced Union High School District Office. Ralph Sherlock and I shared her expertise. She was a beautiful, highly competent assistant. You could assign her any task and you knew it would be a accomplished. And, if for some reason, we were headed in the wrong direction, she straightened us out quickly! My confidence in Doreen's skills was so high, that when our son passed away, I did not hesitate to call on her to plan the funeral reception. She set a high mark for our classified staff while still enjoying a full life. Qualities that we would all admire and respect.

Doreen was a very special lady, role model, friend and co-worker. The years spent working with her in the District Office and the many lunches shared with special ladies who have long retired will be always hold a special place in my heart.

I new Doreen through Merced Union High School District.
When I was in the library at Livingston High School, she helped me with my book count. Sometime good, sometimes bad. She was a wonderful friend and I will miss her smiling face. My best to the families.
