Leroy Murray Obituary
October 25, 1921 - December 9, 2017
Leroy (Roy) Murray, age 96, passed away peacefully in Las Cruces, New Mexico, to join his wife in heaven and be in the arms of the Lord. Roy was a patriot. Born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1941, then transferred to the Army Air Corps in the early days of WWII. In 1947 opted to join the newly created United States Air Force, ultimately retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant.
Moving to Merced in 1979, he worked on the B-52 Simulators at Castle AFB. For 45 years, he was a faithful member of Merced the First Baptist Church and a recent member of the Las Cruces First Baptist Church. His service to Gideons International spanned decades and many a Bible was placed by his hands.
Roy and his beloved wife, Doris, were married for 70 years before her death in 2013.
Direct family members left to mourn his passing include; daughter Judy Laird (Colonel James, USAF Retired) of Las Cruces NM; grandson Jeffrey Laird (April) of Fredericksburg, TX; granddaughter Jennifer Mickle (Colonel JonPaul, USAF) currently of Honolulu, HI; great-grandchildren Caleb and Autumn Laird; and sister, Marjorie Hanks, 99 of E. Longmeadow MA.
In 2014, Roy moved to the Good Samaritan Society of Las Cruces, NM making many new friends and continuing his association with the Gideons. He was always recognized by his cap proudly declaring "World War II, Korean, and Vietnam Veteran".
Roy's remains will return to lie in rest next to his wife at the San Juaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA, where a service will be held on Januay 26th at 11 a.m.
