Louie M. Gonzales, retired agricultural mechanic, U.S. Army Veteran, and life-long resident of Merced, CA passed away unexpectedly on April 1st, 2016 at the age of 82.
Louie was born at home on February 2, 1934 in Le Grand, CA to Luis and Jesus Gonzales. He was raised in Planada, CA and began working at 12 years old. When he became of age, he volunteered and joined the U.S. Army and was a demolition engineer and paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division. While in the service, he married Lydia Sagredo and had 6 children together. After his honorable discharge, Louie worked for several nursery and farming companies and eventually retired from Horizon Farms at the age of 79. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 83 and the VFW. His hobbies included fishing, camping with family, and working on mechanical issues. He was extremely talented and quite the innovator. He was an incredible and charitable man who was always willing to help someone in need. Louie will be greatly missed by friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lydia Gonzales, and their daughters Elizabeth (Victor) Saldana, Lydia (John) Lopez, Dana (Adrian) Bautista, and son Louie (Arlene) Gonzales III. He was the grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sibilings Irene Fernandez, Frances Gonzales, Mary Garcia, Suzy Gonzales, and Pete Gonzales and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his daughters Santa Marie and Mary Lou Gonzales, parents Luis and Jesus Gonzales, brother Guadalupe Gonzales and sister Annie Aguero.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 8, 2016 from 5 to 8 PM with a rosary at 6 PM at Our Lady of Mercy, 459 W. 21st St, Merced, CA. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 9 at 12 PM at Our Lady of Mercy with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Merced.

To the Gonzales family please accept our deepest condolences in the loss of your wonderful husband/father. Louie was such a great man and such a good friend to my dad, Polo Perez. I remember when we were little when they both worked for Striblings so,so many years ago. Whenever we saw him we always had a smile on our faces because we thought very highly of him. God Bless each and everyone of you and pray that our Lord in Heaven give you all the strength especially for your mother to get through this very difficult time.
