Raymond Hayes Obituary

Raymond Lee "Slug " Hayes was a life-long resident of Merced. He was born June 7, 1936 and passed away on December 8, 2013 at 77 years of age.
Ray was born to Elizabeth Ann and Chester Lee Hayes on June 7, 1936, the fifth of six children. He developed a love of baseball at a young age, playing on city league baseball teams, and continued playing throughout high school. He attended Merced High, where he played the position of catcher on the varsity team all four years of high school. Ray graduated from Merced High School in 1954.

Two years later, Ray and Marilyn Sowder were married on June 23, 1956. He continued his education at Fresno State and completed his Bachelor's degree at Stanislaus State as a member of the college's first graduation class.
His teaching career began at Mc Swain School, and two years later he began his 33-year tenure with Merced City School District. Ray first taught mathematics, then physical education at Hoover Jr. High School. He continued his career in education at Tenaya Jr. High School as an Assistant Principal and later as a Learning Resource Teacher. Ray enriched the lives of many students throughout his career, and made life-long Friends with colleagues.
During his teaching career, Ray coached baseball, basketball, track and Wrestling at Hoover and Tenaya Jr. High Schools. He spent the summers coaching city league baseball teams and weekends in the fall coaching young players to championships for the Junior Football League. He continued his involvement in local youth sports by officiating in baseball and basketball Leagues. A life-long 49er fan, Ray only missed one game in nearly sixty years; he will be remembered by all for his competitive spirit.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth; sisters, Dorothy, Doris, Betty Jean, and Barbara.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, daughter, Lisa and husband, Brian, son, Aaron and his wife, Sandy, brother-in-law, Clif Sowder, and five grandchildren; Samuel, Caleb, and Ethan Baker, Kaylie and Carson Hayes.
Please join family and friends for a celebration honoring Ray's life at the First Baptist Church on Buena Vista Drive, Merced, on Friday, December 20, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Ray to Hinds Hospice or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
A reception will follow the service at the church.

A great man. Was my coach in baseball at Tenaya and football with little guys. Playing sports ingrains persistence, effort, teamwork, and sacrifice into you at a young age; an attitude that pays dividends for the rest of your life -- and Coach Hayes set the example. I have thought of him often over the last 35 years, especially him yelling, "NO EXCUSES!" when you messed up at practice. A great man who made a big impact on my life that continues to this day. I am deeply saddened by your loss.

Marilyn and the Fam--
So sad to read of my ol' buddy's passing! We had some great times together, especially those years he coached and played "hard-pitch" for our BULLFROG team. We also coached, bowled, and especially laughed a lot together. I remember all of you kids well and thought the world of you.
A life well lived, my friend Slugger!

I remember Mr Hayes when he taught Math at Hoover. He was the only teacher I knew that would try to help his troubled students (me) and not judge them. Later on we met again and I could call him Slug now that I was a adult.LOL..He was a get caring person . I am so sorry for your loss.

Mr. Hayes,
You were always so good to me during my first years as a teacher. You always welcomed me with a smile and a hello! You took great care of all of us at Tenaya. I was blessed to be among the Best of Tenaya's Dinosaurs!

May God grant you peace and eternal rest. Ray "Slug" has been a friend since elementary school. Ray was a natural leader who included everyone in his circle of friends. Under Ray's leadership the MUHS Class of 1954 enjoyed many festive reunions. Thank you, Ray. It is my honor to have been your friend.

Mr. Hayes was always great to me when I was at their home spending the night with Lisa. I remember him playing baseball games with my Dad...teaching me math shortcuts...enjoying reading the newspaper on the weekends. You all shared many wonderful years with Slug and I know that he will be dearly missed. Sending my love and prayers for the peace of God to comfort you in the days ahead.

I don't remember when I first met Slug. I went to Galen Clark and I think he went to John Muir. ...he did have a 1934 Ford when he worked at the service station at the corner of 16th & N...the parking lot now of the BoA. One memory that I will take with me when I leave is the Bears were playing Fresno High at the Civic Park out by the fairgrounds. He came up to bat and points to the left field fence.(like Babe Ruth did), and everyone cracked up...but, ya know that he jacked ont out of the park for a home run. He emailed me jokes during the week...I knew something was wrong...did not get any for a while. He was our historian for the Class of 1954...one of a kind. [email protected]
