Scott Porter Obituary

Scott William Porter

May 9, 2025

Merced, California - On May 9, 2025 at 12:30 a.m. Scott William Porter, age 76, passed away from complications of a stroke at Mercy Medical Center Merced. The son of Lucy Reed Heard Porter and George William Porter, he is survived by his brothers, Alan Douglas Porter and spouse Elaine Huang, Brian Stuart Porter, and Neil Wesley Porter. Although married briefly early in his life, he had no children. Scott was born in San Francisco in 1949 and grew up in Merced. He attended Milton College in Colorado where he received a BA in Art. He went on to receive a Masters Degree in Art from Fresno State University. He worked over 10 years for the Bechtel Corporation as a construction inspection engineer while living in Saudi Arabia. Coming back to Merced, he became a construction engineer for Merced Irrigation District, a job he held for 22 years and was a valued employee known for his construction expertise. Like his father, he was a man with many hobbies. He loved cooking, fly fishing which involved creating and tying his own flies, and wine making which included restoring his own wine press. For a while he collected vintage outboard motorboat engines. He loved to read and could remember and relate a lot of interesting details from that reading. In the course of reading magazines and newspapers, he would clip articles of interest to send to family and friends thinking to share and stimulate their various interests on a subject. He collected a vast library of music on CD's mostly related to rock'n'roll and the blues. He was a talented conversationalist; a talent shared with his father and could be very entertaining for an evening of dinner and drinks. He will be missed.

I knew Scott from WAY back in the Milton College days. We kept in touch, and I would send him various animal hairs for his fly fishing lures. He was a touchstone, and part of the weave in the fabric of my life.

My sincere condolences to Scott's family and friends. He will be missed by all. I worked next to Scott at the Merced Irrigation District while he was there. He was valued and respected by all. Scott had a kind heart and was always sharing stories, music, and historic tidbits of information - especially when it came to music! He was always hunting for the next great find on EBay to further whatever project he was working on. I miss him greatly. God Bless.

Scott was a good friend in junior high and high school in the '60s, though we didn't stay in touch afterwards. We rode our bikes up to the Sierra foothills, and panned for gold. We also enjoyed coin collecting together, and exploring Merced. Conndolences to his family and other friends. Chris Cobey
