Thomas Kirn Obituary

Thomas Michael Kirn was born September 29, 1933, on the family farm outside of Solomon, Kansas to Louis Michael and Irene Elizabeth Shanahan Kirn, and passed away peacefully on November 24, 2016.
Throughout his childhood, he helped his family farm wheat on their homestead. He left the farming life for the Army, serving as Supply Clerk in the Signal Corps,and was stationed in South Korea during and immediately following the Korean War. He was a decorated veteran, having received the National Defense Medal, Honorable Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He began his stateside civil service after graduating from Creighton University in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
He married Mary Ellen Joyce on November 19, 1960. Tom and Mary Ellen "saw the USA" through his many job changes, criss-crossing the country in service with the Bureau of Reclamation, Federal Highways Administration, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the National Park Service. During his tenure in federal service, Tom's work facilitated important water and defense projects, and many National Park Service sites.
Tom is survived by Mary Ellen, his wife of 56 years; children Michael (Kathleen Buchnoff), Laura (Paul Pyle), Patrick (Marjorie Murphy Kirn), Daniel, Mary Kay Cruz, and Amy Cannon; grand-children Jefferson and Anna Laird, Nicholas, Shannon and McKenzie Kirn, Kevin Isaiah Long, and William and Mary Jane Cruz, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 2nd, 11:00 am, at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Mariposa.

Condolences to Tom's family. We had the honor of knowing him during his stay at Park Merced. He was a gentleman and good friend to both of our dad's that lived there these past years.
