Arthur Gonsalves Obituary

Arthur John Gonsalves
Apr. 6, 1922 - Aug. 6, 2015
Resident of San Jose
Arthur John Gonsalves (Art), age 93 of San Jose, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 6, 2015 surrounded by his devoted wife and children. He was born to the late Manuel and Leanore Gonsalves in Marysville, California on April 6, 1922.
Art leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Lorraine; his 6 children, 2 sons-in-law, 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Herman and Charles, sister, Sr. Kathleen and daughter-in-law, Susan Lynn. He is survived by his sisters, Mary and Eleanor, and brother, Joseph.
Art graduated from Santa Clara University with a B.A. degree in Business. Art provided for his family as a salesman for over 35 years and spent 28 of those years at Sears Roebuck, retiring in 1984. He was a top salesman for many years and was inducted into the Sears Hall of Fame in the mid-70's.
Art was a health advocate and made eating well and exercising daily a priority for himself and his family. Laughter, golf, swimming, hand-ball and family vacations were the things that brought Art joy. Humor was important to Art and he loved making his family laugh.
Family, Faith and Community were Art's tenets in life. He was a very faithful man and devoted Catholic. He was an active parishioner at St. John Vianney Catholic Church for over 60 years. Art was an integral part of leadership both within the church and school, serving in many capacities and touching the lives of countless people along the way.
Art was a humble and selfless man who always put others first. He devoted his life to serving those in need by volunteering for the St. Vincent De Paul Society for nearly 58 years. He served as President for 5 of those years.
Art served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. Throughout Art's life, he spoke frequently of his time in the service and often recalled memories of his friends that served with him. Serving his country was an important part of who Art was as a man.
The Rosary will be held at St. John Vianney Church, 4600 Hyland Ave, San Jose, on August 10, 2015 at 7:00pm. Celebration of Life service will be held at St. John Vianney Church on August 11, 2015 at 11:00am. Reception immediately following service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be made in Art's name, to the St. Vincent De Paul Society of Santa Clara County. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 5579, San Jose, CA 95150-5579.

Not sure what to say?

January 31, 2016

This is a very late sympathy note to Art's wife, Lorraine and her family. I knew them both from St John Vianney Parish for many years, however when my husband John passed away in July of 2013, I moved away to the central valley to be with my elderly mother. I am deeply saddened by the news I received only a couple of days ago that Art is now in heaven. Art, rest in peace and please say hello to my John and hug him for me. We will all be reunited one day and be forever present with our beloved Jesus. Lorraine, please be well, and my prayers are with you for continued strength to carry on.

Fondly,
Toni Rossi

Art and Lorraine will always have a special place in my heart for everything they did for me and the entire Blaylock family. I'm not sure Art ever really needed that set of "World Book" encyclopedias, but it sure helped my dad as a part time salesman and school teacher. His assistance in getting my dad a job at Sears was greatly appreciated. Art was a very kind man with a beautiful smile. Thank you Art.

My Uncle Art shall surely be missed. I've got a lot of fond memories while growing up of him and the family. He is going on to a great place beside our loving Lord and Savior. " For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living" Psalms 116:8-9 My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I want to send my condolences to Lorraine and the entire Gonsalves family. Art was a fine man and sold me several appliances at Sears in the 1980's. He was a pro in his line of work but even more importantly, he was a wonderful and spiritual man in many ways who lived a long and accomplished life and will be fondly remembered by family and friends. And he was also a long time close friend of my uncle and aunt, Julio and Dorothy Fernandez.

Rest in peace, Art, and enjoy your new life in Heaven.
