Carrie Sogg Obituary

Carrie Sogg
Oct. 31, 1962 - July 9, 2017
Brooklyn, NY
Carrie Sogg, age 54, died in Brooklyn, NY, on July 9, 2017 after a long illness.
The daughter of Richard Sogg, who resides in Los Gatos, and Joyce Sogg (also of Los Gatos), who predeceased her, Carrie leaves her husband Ralph Bonheim and son Stefan Bonheim, 12, of Brooklyn, NY, as well as her brother David Sogg of Pittsburgh, PA.
Carrie was gifted, funny, and multi-talented. She lived three lives—as an animal lover, artist, and social worker. At the age of 9 she acquired her first animal, a German Shepherd. From elementary through high school, she owned and trained 2 horses—first, Bianca a Welsh mare pony, and then Toy's Flick-a-Spot, an Appaloosa—and won many ribbons in arena shows and trail obstacle course events. While living in New York, she trained 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels—Bica and Cricket—with one becoming a therapy animal and both accompanying her bird watching in Prospect Park.
A graduate of Saratoga High School, Carrie then earned a degree in art from UC-Davis. Her friends benefited from her talent through annual New Year's cards that always contained a visual pun based on the year, fanciful animals, and (frequently) implicit political commentary. Her writing skills earned her posts as a copy writer for prestigious New York firms.
Her desire to benefit others led her to obtain a Masters in Social Work at Columbia University and to work for several Brooklyn agencies. A Columbia colleague introduced her to Ralph, whom she married in 1999. He is a science writer, creator of multimedia presentations, and tenor in New York area semiprofessional choirs. Their son Stefan shares his mother's love of musical theater and has performed in musicals and choruses, plays piano, and tap dances.
Though taken from us too soon, Carrie's passion, spirit, and wit persist in memories of her life and in the lives of her husband and son, to whom so much of her life was devoted.
Contributions in Carrie's memory may be made to Planned Parenthood, Audubon Society, Good Dog Foundation, ACLU, or another organization.

I just stumbled upon Carrie's obituary and am so sad. I have fond memories of Carrie from high school. I remember that we both became annoyed when our freshman English teacher assigned "Flowers for Algernon" and gave the class weeks to read a book that we had completed in one night. Annoyance led to giggling and two usually serious students became disruptive for the first time in either of our lives. The teacher "punished" us with an assignment to read Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and write an expository essay. We were actually happy about our punishment, which just led to more giggling. Carrie had a wonderfully dry sense of humor and we shared a love of puns. She had such a kind heart and loved her animals, especially her horse, Bianca. My heart goes out to her family for their loss. May her memory be for a blessing.
