Charles "Charlie" Walker Brandon, III was a remarkable man. We met as we were both residents of Menlo Park; I, an African American, Chicagoan (of Texas family origins), and female nerd or geek and Charlie, a White Southerner, and almost a recluse in his love of privacy. Yet, when Charlie talked about and trained me to understand operations research, modeling, politics in business and exploring possibilities -- all of which he operationalized with the beginnings of FedEx -- race and gender flew out the window. Trips to Bolinas were filled with schematics, questions and pure friendship. Flights to Monterey in "Honey Bunny" were filled with notetaking on my part and redirections of ideas on his. Today, I am a corporate and biocultural anthropologist. However, my strategic and futuristic thinking coupled with the application of the scientific method to operations, is due, in a great part, to the friendship and mentoring of Charlie. It's nice to know that Charlie will no longer have to be limited in "flying under the hood" of this world, but will forever know the freedom of the heavens where CAVU is real ---Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited. Cheers to both Charles Walker Brandon and also to "Bunny Rabbit."

I got to meet Charlie Brandon in a meeting with Fred Smith in the 1980's at a FedEx meeting. He was an innovative pioneer in building the Info Systems and Operations Research departments at FedEx and a large part of making that company the success it is today.

I terribly miss you already, Chas.. I will forever treasure your love in my heart. God blessed me when we crossed path. Thank you so much for your care and love and kindness.. for everything you taught me.. for sharing your rich and colourful and painful life experiences, and the so many words of wisdom.. and the many jokes as well. You were brilliant.. you were great. I will hold dear every little thing I have of you. God loves you. You've always said, "to die suddenly without suffering is a gift from God"... and He granted you His gift.. I am just so sorry I was not with you at that very moment. You are at peace now hon...no more meds, no more pains, no more doctors... and as you would often say, "Let go and let God..." My unceasing prayers go with you hon. I love you so much..

Love as always,
Eve
