Daniel Gordon Howe, age 40, departed this world after a long struggle with illness. Born in Rochester, NY, he grew up in Mountain Lakes, NJ, graduating from Mountain Lakes HS (1992), a member of the National Honor Society. He spent 5 years in Boulder, CO, working for Boulder Tree Service while exploring the Rocky Mountains. In Boston he studied engineering at Northeastern. In 2001 Daniel came to California, completed a degree in math at Cal State East Bay (2008), and began a passionate study of world religions. A kind and caring soul, Daniel was a beloved spiritual and life counselor to a wide community of friends in the South Bay. Loving son of Linda Howe-Steiger and Lawrence Donald Steiger (step-dad) of Oakland, CA, and Thomas A. Howe and Margaret Howe (step-mom) of Morristown, NJ; cherished brother of Katherine Howe of Berkeley, CA. A Memorial Service will be held on Tues. Jan. 27 at Grace Baptist Church, 484 E. San Fernando St. (at 10th) in San Jose. In lieu of flowers consider donating in Daniel's honor to the National Alliance on Mental Health at www.nami.org.

I knew Daniel for 4 years and he truly influenced my life in a big way. I looked forward to visiting him and seeing him when I could because he was fun and caring. I would frequently talk to him on the phone about spirituality and he'd be thrilled to tell me all the new things he learned. I remember he especially told me he had a few conversations with very wise people and learned so much from them. I will remember Daniel for his grace and spirit; I will miss Daniel so much and will keep him in my prayers. I also met Linda and I'd like her to know that her son was a good friend and I'm very sorry for her loss.

I am so sorry for the loss of Daniel. It is apparent that he was loved by his family and friends, and will be missed a lot. I only knew Daniel briefly as a child but knew his parents well. Tom and Linda know that I am thinking of you and wish you peace as you mourn the loss of your son.
