Daniel Tellep Obituary

Daniel Tellep
November 20, 1931 - November 26, 2020
Resident of Saratoga, CA
Daniel M. Tellep, retired Chairman and CEO of the Lockheed Martin Corporation, and longtime resident of Saratoga, CA, passed peacefully at home with family and loved ones at his side on Nov. 26th, 2020. He was 89. Born in 1931 to immigrant parents in Forest City, PA, a small coal mining town, his family later relocated to San Diego, CA during the Great Depression. Dan came from humble beginnings and attributed his fulfillment and success in life to his parents, Mary and John, who instilled in him a devotion to family, an ethic of hard work, the value of education and the importance of kindness to others.

Dan attended the University of California at Berkeley graduating summa cum laude with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1954 and then earned his Master of Science degree the following year. He credited his professors at Berkeley for a transformative opening of his mind to the "elegance of mathematics and equations". Then in 1971, he completed advanced management studies at Harvard University, Graduate School of Business Administration.

Dan's remarkable 43-year career in the aerospace industry began in 1955 when he joined the ranks of the newly formed Lockheed Missiles & Space Company as a principal scientist and 200th employee in an abandoned hangar in Van Nuys, CA, working on re-entry technology. In 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, provoking an aerospace competition with the U.S. and fueling a wave of innovation and growth in the industry. Ultimately, Lockheed Missiles and Space Company grew to 30,000 employees and Dan was named president in 1984. In 1989, he was selected to lead Lockheed Corporation as CEO and Chairman.

In an era of shrinking defense budgets, Dan was the first to propose a merger between Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta recognizing that a combined company would be stronger. The merger, known as the "merger of equals" created the world's largest defense company. Dan became Lockheed Martin's first Chairman and CEO in 1995. He served as CEO for nine months, then remained as Chairman until 1998.

Outside of work, Dan was an accomplished pilot, watercolorist, runner, hiker, writer, traveler and all-around great family man and friend. His family will miss his unique talent for function and elegance in design — whether embodied in a hand-built painter's easel, an organizational project for his workshop/studio, a children's playhouse, backyard garden landscape or medieval sandcastle built with his grandchildren at Carmel River Beach. Dan's daughters and their neighborhood friends from the Sixties will especially miss his homemade rockets and fireworks on the Fourth of July, Blue Angel airshows at Moffet Field, and weekend outings to the neighborhood school fields chasing after his occasionally wayward radio-controlled model airplanes.

He is survived by his four daughters, Teresa Tellep, Mary Tellep, Susan Tellep (Cindy) and Patricia Axelrod (Mark); his first wife, Margaret Lewis; two stepdaughters from his second marriage, Chris Chatwell (May) and Anne Bossange (Kent); grandchildren Vanessa Daniele, Rachel Nichting (Mark), Benjamin Axelrod (Torey), Samantha Gordon (Casey), Nathan Axelrod, Lynn Bossange (Lou) and Kate Macias (David); great-grandchildren Taylor, Reed, Katherine Grace, Evelyn and Sonny; and longtime family friend and devoted caregiver, Martha Chacon and family. He is predeceased by his parents Mary and John Tellep, brother Michael, and second wife Patricia Taylor Baumgardner.

Private family services to be held in the future. Memorial donations may be made to Big Sur Land Trust, Point Lobos Foundation, the Carmelite Monastery of Carmel, Second Harvest Food Bank, UC Berkeley College of Engineering, or a charity of one's choice.

I met Dan my second day at work. He came in every friday as he walked thru the facilities. He always asked what he could do to help us. One occasion he contacted the president of HP to speed up delivery of custom test equipment we needed to start a program test. We started on time!! He helped move some heavy equipment we had on dollies! He told me he liked his job as CEO because it enabled him to help so many people. He gave us encouragement and a sense of pride. Thank you Dan Tellep!!!

I testify to Mr. Tellep's sense of encouragement and kindness to each and all Lockheed employees, guests, and that led to include his respect and kindness to all. Thank you for this opportunity.

I currently work for Lockheed in Marietta Georgia and in the 1990s he visited our facility and he had a large crowd of management giving him a plant tour. I could see that he would have rather walked alone and meet the hourly workers instead. He is so instrumental in why we still have jobs here in Marietta and I appreciate Mr Tellep. Condolences to the family and friends RIP.

He was a close friend at Cal. We lived in the same dorm and played together on sports teams including a University champion softball team.
Dan was a person who had all the talents, and these were identified early. I believe that Lockheed hired him before he finished his degrees and ticketed him for top management. The last time I saw him was at a Cal engineering school annual meeting.
I have a lot of pictures of Dan and Marge in their college days and would be happy to make copies for family members if they'd like them.

I was a painting buddy of Dan's in the Saratoga Community of Painters for many years. He was a delight to work with in our group. He did a commission for me of my son fly fishing that I treasure.

I had the honor to work for Dan many years ago - in the mid-1960's when Dan was my Division Manager. I had been with Lockheed for about 5 years by then and he was such an inspiration for a young guy like me. I watched him go to company president and on to lead the corporation. What a great gentleman. I worked for Lockheed for 39 years and always felt the company, and the fleet ballistic missile system we supported, was one of the best combinations in the country. And much of it thanks to Dan.

My late Dad used to speak so highly of Mr. Tellep. I was so saddened when I saw the obituary in today's paper. Dad worked for him and had nothing but wonderful things to say about him. He, too, worked for Lockheed for a long time. Our prayers go out to his family and friends. We are so sorry for your loss.
