The article about Dave in the San Jose Mercury news said that there was going to be a public memorial for Dave. Does anyone know when it is? Thank you. Diane (posted earlier on this list as well)

I had the privilage of taking care of Dave & Karen's personal home security for years until he retired from KPIX and moved "down south". I will always remember Dave's thoughtful and cleaver wit, even when we worked through a few serious challenges together. Dave was truly a kind, gentle man, and my condolences and best wishes go out Karen & to the family.

Right out of college I started at KCBS as an apprentice. Dave took me under his wing and was instrumental in my advancement out of the mail room. I worked with him on many shows and we became good friends. Unlike a lot of people in radio, he was the same friendly, joyful person off the air as he was on. His passing brought on many fond memories of those early days.

I and my family grew up with Mac. The "McElhatton, Tokuda, and Bartlett Show," as we called it, was an important part of our day. I have him on tape the day the Challenger went down, and I'll never forget how he covered it, and then finally said, There is other news tonight." I was sad when he retired and even sadder now. Among other things, Mac was a pilot, and I hope he's flying higher than ever now. God speed Mac.

Dave gave me a reason to watch local news regularly. He and Wendy were the best Bay Area news team; onscreen he always was a gentleman as he delivered the news and interacted with Wendy. Thanks and God bless you, Dave.

Dave and Wendy Tokuda were the best duo in the news. I remember when he was freezing his * off while reporting on the Winter Olympics. He looked so cold and miserable, his loyal followers started a petition to bring him back home. He was one of us!

We will all miss Dave McElhatton so much. His warmth, humor and intelligence gave each person a feeling that they knew Dave - that he was a friend whose word we could trust. What calm, steady words he used to help us through some of the terrible and wonderful moments of the time we saw him visit us in our homes each day.
Thank you, Dave, for being there. Prayers and comfort to your family now.

I just returned to the Bay Area after a 15 year absence. I remember Dave Mcelhatton, I grew up watching him on the new's. I remember the "even keel matter of facts" reporting he did.If the roof was moving above him he stayed calm, collected and kept going.
He will be missed. My condolences to his family, his new's family, and all those who remember and will miss him.

I moved out here in 1979 at the age of 22. Leaving my family behind in Colorado was hard. The first voice that brought me a sense of comfort was hearing Dave McElhatton on the evening news. Listening to Mac was like listening to the "Walter Cronkite" of the Bay Area. Always factual and never over-sensationalized, but had a great trait of keeping the much needed humor in the news.

Our family loved Dave. We grew up to the resonance of his deep voice on the evening news at 6 & 11. He delivered each broadcast with honesty and integrity - qualities which are rare today. Dave's ready smile made you just feel better, in spite of the events of any particular day. God speed to a fine man. May his family find peace in the days ahead knowing he is loved and remembered by so many.

We may never see a news personality like Mac again. His ability to banter intelligently was due as much to his wit as to his years on radio. I much preferred news from Dave, a real person, to that from the Ken and Barbie dolls thrust upon us by corporate trend watchers. I could always trust Dave to tell it like it is. Godspeed, Mr. McElhatton.

Dave was a dear friend of my dad's (Joe Dee), at our home several times in the 60's and 70's, attending my wedding in 1967. He was smart, with a razor sharp wit, and a great prankster. Once phoned me in 1964 at my college dorm at 6:15 a.m. (on air) to have me tell him the weather in Santa Clara! RIP, Dave and my condolences to all your family and friends.
