Dwight Cannon Obituary

CANNON, Prof. Dwight W. -- Entered peacefully into rest on July 18, 2003, in Sacramento, CA. Born on July 6, 1932, in Pomona, CA, survived by his four children, Jeffrey, Stephen, Ariane, and Matthew; grandchildren Ryan, Thomas, Jr., Sven, and Caroline; brother, Peter Cannon; step-mother, Audrey Cannon. Dwight possessed rare musical talent from a young age, which he further developed at De Paul University in Chicago. He played first trumpet with well-known Chicago big bands following service in the Navy in the Korean War. Dwight became Professor of Music at San Jose State University in the late 1960s, where he touched the lives and hearts of innumerable students and fellow educators for more than thirty years, and where he pioneered to create the first Jazz Major in the CSU system and the innovative Improvised Music Studies program. Friends and family are invited to celebrate his life at an open reception at Original Joe's Restaurant, 301 South First Street, San Jose, on Sunday, July 27, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. 'The tree is known by his fruit.' Matthew 12:33.

Dwight brought such outstanding experiences to us at San Jose State there should have been a front page article on him in the Murky News. From playing Don Ellis' charts to shaking hands with J.J. Johnson to reaching us at our level, he was the consummate educator. Gabriel has a back-up!

Dear Dwight,

I'll never forget those happy years when we both had homes with young families on Golden State Drive in Santa Clara. You were one good friend! Love always, Gary
