Dwight Small Obituary

SMALL, Dwight Hervey -- Dwight Hervey Small, 84, of Arroyo Grande passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at his home following a lifetime battle with diabetes. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Bible Church in Arroyo Grande. Dwight was born March 1, 1919, in Oakland to Benjamin and Ragnihild Small. He lived and attended schools in that area until graduating from the University of California at Berkeley. While attending Cal Berkeley, he met his future wife, Ruth Elizabeth Stone, whom he married in 1942. He attended Dallas Theological Seminary and San Francisco Theological Seminary, graduating in 1943. Dwight's pastorates were in Fresno, San Jose, Philadelphia, PA, Cicero, IL, and Redwood City. He was a sought-after conference speaker through the United States and Central America. He taught courses at Wheaton College and Fuller Seminary and joined the faculty of Westmont College in 1970, retiring in 1982 as Professor Emeritus. Dwight's love for study and writing led to the publication of 14 books in the areas of Christian marriage, spiritual living, and Biblical perspectives on social issues. He also contributed many articles to Christian magazines and numerous chapters to other published works. Dwight will ever be remembered for his passion for the Word of God and its message of truth and grace, his love and unwavering support of family and friends, and his delightful sense of humor. Dwight is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Ruth; daughters Lynne Tahmisian and Shay Peck; grandsons, Gregg, Tim and Bryan Tahmisian and Kenny and Troy Cudworth; great-grandchildren Mariah and Geoffrey Tahmisian. The joy of his retirement years was closeness with family. Memorial contributions may be sent to Mt. Hermon Christian Conference Center, P.O. Box 413, Mt. Hermon, CA 95041 or to Westmont College, Office of College Advancement, 955 La Paz Rd., Santa Barbara, CA 93108.
