Edward Keating Obituary

KEATING Sr., Edward M. -- founder and publisher of Ramparts magazine and one-time Congressional candidate, died April 2 at Stanford Hospital after a brief illness. The Mt. View resident has lived on the Peninsula since the 1940s. He is survived by six children, Mike Keating of Palo Alto, Karen Keating McCann of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Steve Keating of Palo Alto, Melissa Keating McCann of Lafayette, Kate Keating Bowles of San Anselmo, and John Keating of Salem, Oregon, and six grandchildren. Mr. Keating was a well-known figure in the 1960s, notably as the West coast Chairman of the Committee to End the War in Vietnam, and as one of the legal team representing Huey Newton in the famous murder trial. Mr. Keating's magazine, Ramparts, was the first major national publication to be a voice for the liberal left in the 1960s. He was a Naval radar technician in World War II, and a graduate of Stanford Law School. There will be an open house to celebrate his life on Saturday, April 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Steve Keating's home at 232 Margarita Ave., Palo Alto.
