Esther Johnson Obituary

The much-loved Esther (Yianopoulos) Johnson passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 27th after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. Esther was born in Lowell, Massachusetts to the late Anastasia (Trahanias) Yianopoulos and the late Peter Yianopoulos. Esther was a graduate of Lowell High School and Lowell Commercial College. An adventurer at heart, at the age of 28, Esther drove cross-country with her friend from Lowell to explore the Bay Area after hearing how beautiful it was from her brother Peter, who was stationed there. She fell in love with the area and settled in Cupertino, California. Esther worked at Lockheed Martin for over 30 years where she met her beloved husband, the late Verne Johnson, with whom she spent 7 joyful years before his passing. Esther was known for her charm, humor, and unforgettable infectious laugh. She had a passion for travel and visited Hawaii frequently. For Esther's most memorable trip, she took her mother to Mytilene, Greece; it was the first time her mother returned to her birthplace since she was a young girl. She is predeceased by her brothers, George Oknos and Peter Yianopoulos; and survived by her siblings, Mary Miserlis, Crysostomos Yianopoulos, Christos Yianopoulos and his wife Jeannine, many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends. She considered Nancy, Indru, Sevita, Paula, Judy, Christine, and Socrates her West Coast family.Esther was a woman of deep faith and an active participant in the Greek Orthodox community. Esther's final words to her family and friends were, "Thanks for everything. I love you, and… I had a great life…God bless you." Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 62 Lewis Street, Lowell from 9:00 am to 10:00am. Her Funeral Service will begin at 10:00am. Interment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, donations may be made in Esther's name to either the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (62 Lewis Street, Lowell, Massachusetts 01854), or to the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (1260 Davis Street, San Jose, California 95126).
