Evan Baker Obituary

Evan Baker
November 23, 1934 - March 26, 2022
Resident of Saratoga
Evan Smith Baker passed away on March 26, 2022 after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, of fifty-nine years. He is also survived by his son Mark, and two grandsons, Daniel and David, and great-grandson Matthew.
Evan was the younger son of Arthur and Dorothy Baker and was born on Nov. 23 1934. He grew up in West Orange, New Jersey, and attended West Orange High School. Among his accomplishments during high school, was attaining the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. After graduation in 1952, he entered Tufts University and enrolled in the Naval ROTC program. During his time at Tufts, Evan joined Delta Upsilon Fraternity and became a lifelong member. Evan graduated in 1956 and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy. He then served on destroyers and submarines until 1962. While on active duty, he met his wife Bev in 1961 and they were married in 1963. Following his service, Evan went to work for Hughes Aircraft, and later GTE Government Services, in the Washington D.C. area.
In 1977 Evan was transferred to California, and with Bev and Mark moved to Saratoga. He remained with GTE until he retired in 1995. Evan was actively involved in many civic and community organizations. Among these organizations was the Navy League of the United States where he served as National President from 1993 to 1995. He was also a member of the Knights Templar and was invested into the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller in 2003. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Masons. Evan served on the Saratoga City council and was Vice Mayor in 2002.
Evan will be remembered for his unwavering patriotism and his service to the country, state, community and his neighborhood. Most of all, he will be remembered for his love of family. Evan will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Condolences to the family of a fellow West Orangeite, Eagle Scout and Submariner. I knew Evan at scout camp and on the submarine Trout in 1960. I have thought of Evan many times over the years and am saddened by his.passing .
