I knew Frances Gladding only as Grammy Appleton when I was a small boy. We spent many hours visiting with her and hearing stories over tea and apple cider.
I remember Grammy Appletons glasses. For some reason they always fascinated me. I think she was the first person I saw who wore glasses on a chain. I remember trying to detach them and take the chain. She was quite patient with us. And we always terrorized her cat.
She always remembered my birthday with a card and I'll never forget her signature. She signed Grammy [drawing of an apple]ton.

I called Frances Gladding my Grammy Appleton. She was wonderful to me, made me rocky road ice cream milkshakes with an old fashioned milkshake maker just like a 50's diner, fed me my favorite foods... strawberries and shrimp cocktail every night, drove me to gymnastics practice every day and encouraged me in every way she could think of. She knew I wanted to be like the Olympic athletes I idolized, so she made me a scrapbook with a page for every great athlete.... and yes, she made me my own page! She put me on an equal level with all those Olympians! I wish she could have been there to see the day that my greatest hero, Nadia Comaneci actually introduced me as the star of the show she was hosting! Grammy Appleton would have loved to see that! She always knew it was possible. She was a huge influence in my life and although I am so sad to hear that she has left this earth, I am totally excited to see her again in Heaven some day.
