Frank Scheufele Obituary

Frank Scheufele
April 23, 1926 – May 27, 2017
Menlo Park
Frank Scheufele passed away from complications of heart disease. Frank was known for his zest for life and his love of the symphony, travel, business and reading, especially history.
Frank was the oldest of three children of Frank and Marion Scheufele Sr. He grew up in Wellesley, MA. Frank enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, and served in a bomb and mine disposal unit throughout the Pacific theater including Japan shortly after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war, Frank majored in engineering at Tufts College, and began working soon after for Raytheon Corporation. His lifelong love of the symphony began as a young man attending the Boston Symphony. He loved the San Francisco Symphony and attended concerts regularly until the year before his death.
Having seen California during his wartime service, Frank moved to Southern California with his first wife, Elizabeth Hays, whom he married in 1950. They raised five children: Susan, Carol, Robin, Chris, and Peter. Frank worked at Beckman Instruments, first as Director of Marketing and later as Director of R&D while earning a MBA from UCLA. Frank moved his family to Woodside in 1970 when he became the President and CEO of Durrum Instrument, and later Chairman of the Board of Directors of International Plasma Corp. Frank also worked at the American Electronics Association, Technical Instruments and Ciphergen Biosystems. He was a founder of Dionex and Compumetrics.
Frank married his second wife, Mary Jean Place in 1983, and lived in Palo Alto for 30 years while traveling extensively and living in Paris for two years.
Frank was a mentor, teacher, and friend to numerous colleagues in the business world. He worked with many associates spanning 40+ years and three start-up companies. Frank was cherished for his inspiring stories, wisdom, and boundless energy that he brought to his work.
Frank is survived by his five children, four grandchildren, Annemarie, Spencer, Gregory and Nina, his sister, Karen Miller, and his three step-children, Tamara, Andrea, and Nicola. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the San Francisco Symphony or symphony of your choice.

I am a friend of Carol's from the Santa Clara Corps Home League, & now live in Virginia. I want to send my deepest sympathy to Carol, & all of the family. I never knew Frank, but now realize where Carol got her loving, caring & generous traits. I admire Frank for all of his work, activities & adventures. To Carol, especially, I'm sorry you have to go through this challenge. Stay close to Jesus, & He will comfort you & bring you peace. I will keep all of the family in my prayers. In Christian Love, Linda

I enjoyed many wonderful conversations on Friday evenings with Frank. His amazing stories of the past sprinkled with youthful optimism of the future warmed my heart. I thank his family, especially his daughter, for helping to get him over to Carpaccio in Menlo Park where we would all enjoy the beautiful man that was our Frank. He will be missed by so many, but will always be in my happy memories.
