James E. Noah

Resident of Los Gatos

1931 - 2010

Retired professor and former Director of Public Relations at San Jose State University, James E. Noah died at his home in Los Gatos Saturday, October 30 after an 18-month battle with lung cancer.

Born July 28, 1931 in De Moines, IA, he was raised in East Moline, Il and attended Illinois State University for three semesters before entering the US Army and serving 28 months in Germany. He returned to ISU on the GI Bill, married Janet Weldon in 1954 and earned his Master's Degree in English in 1957.

He taught for a few years at Northern Illinois University before taking a job as Assistant Public Relations Director at SJSU in 1962. He was appointed Director of Public Relations at SJSU in 1965 and held that position until 1978, when he resigned to return to the classroom. He taught public relations in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at SJSU, while also directing the School's internship program, until his retirement in 1995.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife Janet in 2005. He leaves many dear friends, former colleagues and students, and his family. Jim is survived by his three daughters: Amy Rosenkranz of Sacramento, Lisa Foshay of Paso Robles and Sara Noah of Fair Oaks, and sons-in-law Kirk Rosenkranz and Laird Foshay. He leaves nine grandchildren: Nicole and Emily Romero; Sam, Jackson and Angeline Foshay, and Sheila, Olivia, James and Elena Dills. He is also survived by his sister Jackie and brother-in-law Bill Dean of Florida, and 5 nieces and nephews: Kevin Weldon, Karen Sirovy, Laura Dean, Brian Dean, and Donna Mangrum.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 14 at Almaden Hills Methodist Church, 1200 Blossom Hill Road, San Jose. The family would especially like to thank Dr. James Cohen and staff for their excellent care of Jim during his illness, his home caretakers for their kind care, and the staff and volunteers from Hospice of the Valley. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to Hospice of the Valley, 4850 Union Avenue, San Jose, CA 95124. The Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

I was saddened to read of Dr. Noah's passing. He wasn't just a terrific PR professor but a *true teacher* of the field at SJSU, and one of the reasons I selected that as my major there. Rest in peace, Dr. Noah. You deserve it!
