Joanne Smartt
Sept. 21, 1927 - Dec. 24, 1921
Resident of Cupertino
The only child of Loyd S. Whitbeck and Bessie A. Severeid, Joanne was born in Elmhurst, IL and raised in Lombard, IL. She attended Cornell College and the University of Iowa and Northwestern, where she earned a teaching degree.
Joanne followed her parents to California in 1950, and taught elementary school. She met James (Jim) Smartt at San Jose State. They married in 1952, and were married until 2009 when Jim died.Joanne was a dedicated churchgoer and a member of the Saratoga Presbyterian Church (now Menlo Church - Saratoga Campus). She loved to sing and was a member of her church choir and for many years also sang in the Elbon (formerly AAUW) Singers. She also loved to read,attending the opera, and spending time with her family, including many camping trips.
Joanne is survived by daughter Kari Skouson, son Brian, daughter-in-law Sheri (Neumann)Smartt, and grandchildren Molly, Turner and Glenn Smartt.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Menlo Church, 20455 Herriman Ave, Saratoga. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Opera San Jose.
