Joe Izzo Obituary

Joe Izzo, Jr.

Resident of San Jose

October 21, 1950 - January 5, 2012

Joe Izzo passed away peacefully at home on January 5, 2012, at the age of 61 from complications of bladder cancer. He was born on October 21, 1950 to Joseph George Izzo and Florence Graganella, both of whom preceded Joe in death.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Lisa Politeo, his dear sister, Cynthia Bruce and brother-in-law, Daniel Bruce. He is survived as well by aunts Phyllis Taglarino and Tina Arpaia and uncle Mike Arpaia, and nieces Alexandra Politeo, Laura Cannon, Joan Cannon and Zoe Politeo Freeman, and nephew Lucas Cannon. Joe also leaves behind his loyal dog, Fidel.

After earning a B.A. degree and teaching credential at SJSU, Joe embarked on a long fulfilling career in education with the County of Santa Clara Schools from which he retired in 2007. In addition to teaching, Joe forged a career in the field of writing, co-authoring San Jose's very first restaurant guide, A Forkful of San Jose, in the late 1970's. He went on to publish his own restaurant guides, South Bay Hotplates and The Businessman's Companion to the Silicon Valley, as well as spending productive years both with the San Jose Mercury News and the San Jose Metro as restaurant reviewer. Joe also authored and published many well-respected works of fiction over the years.

In his later years, Joe turned his creative touch to drawing hundreds of mystical mandalas, imbued with the quality of Joe's own spirituality.

Joe and his writing partner, Joe Mangelli, wrote numerous screenplays, including, Lockdown, which was made into a film in the 1980's. In 2009-2010, they produced an independent production of their Screenplay, Uncle Louie, which won 2 Awards of Merit at national film competitions. Joe was able to travel to Buffalo, New York in 2011, where Uncle Louie was an official selection to the Buffalo-Niagara Film Festival. It was a homecoming for Joe, whose parents were from Buffalo and where he still has a large and warm family. Uncle Louis also won the Audience Favorite Award at the 2011 Columbia Gorge Film Festival.

Joe's other passion was surfing which was a life-long pursuit. He was a founding member of the Majestic Scribes, Social Athletic, 15 Metetr Yacht Club and Grill. An ordained minister in the Church of the Sub-Genius, Joe was able to ordain many others into this illustrious organization.

A truly giving and compassionate man, Joe had the magical gift of making everyone he came in contact with feel interesting and important. His contagious enthusiasm infused everyone and everything around him. As Joe, himself, would say, he has now been translated into the archetypes. Joe will be deeply missed. A good man is gone.

Services will be held Sunday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Willow Glen Funeral Chapel, 1039 Lincoln Avenue, San Jose. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Joe's name to the Bill Wilson Center or Hospice of the Valley.

Love the way you taught me as a young teenager & it's followed me in life. One of my favorite sayings was " You don't have to do anything in life but you will suffer consequences if you don't do the right thing" Rest in Paradise.

Its been a long time chronologically since Joey passed but very few days go by without thinking about his wonderfully wacky sense of humor and loving and caring way.. Remember going to Oakland with him to review Lady Esther's restaurant.. the laughs and fun riding back in under the camper shell in the back of my pickup.. and teaching with him at Moorpark..students loved him and to Lisa know our thoughts and hugs go out to you for the great loving care you gave Joe thru his battle.. I taught with Joe in the late 70's in Fremont, CA. He had a profound influence on my life. His sense of humor was unmatched; he could make me laugh just being in the same room with him. I'll always treasure our outdoor adventures from whitewater rafting and skiing. We lost contact after I left the Bay Area in the mid 80's and I have missed Joe ever since. I am deeply saddened by his passingafter all these years I still considered him a good friend and past mentor. My heartfelt condolences to those loved ones he left behind.

MY REGARDS AND SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY OF JOE IZZO, JR:
A great writer and teacher was lost! I followed his restaurant reviews as an interested restaurant broker and lover of good foods. Now, I find out he was not only with my family name (Izzo), but came from Buffalo as I was born in Lackawanna, New York. Joe we'll miss you and your wonderful writings! My son, Joey Izzo could learn some things from you; he's poorer for not having known you!

I just learned tonight of Joey's passing . My Father, John Runfola and Joey's Dad, Joe Izzo were life time buddies. I have not seen Joey in many years, but I had to write and tell you how very sorry I was to hear of his passing . We were about the same age , and I remember playing with Joey and Cynthia when we were little kids . May he RIP

I am saddened to hear of Joe's passing. My prayers and condolences go out to his family at this difficult time. I became friends with Joe while he was teaching high school to at-risk teens. He could always put a smile on my face no matter what else was going on in my life at that time. He had a wonderful gift for finding something positive in almost any situation. I had the opportunity to have Mr. Joe Izzo as my high school teacher. I am honored to have known a man with so much knowledge. He was a teacher everyone would love to be around. He would make jokes to make us laugh and took the time to teach us when others gave up on us. Thank you Joe for everything you shared with all of us. You are allways going to hold a special place in my heart. My sincere condolences to his loving wife and family. May god hold and comfort you through this time.

I feel fortunate to have had Joe in my life. A brother-like brother in law, always greeted with a bear hug, stimulated by all that was around him, opinionated, but never a mean word..always thoughtful of others. Treated young people with the same respect as he would anyone else, even delighting in their wisdom and innocence. Creative, artistic, funny and loving. I will miss Joe very much. He lives on in others.
