Johanna 'Nan' Advokaat Joesten

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Oct. 9 for Johanna "Nan" Advokaat Joesten who died Sept. 22 in Santa Cruz from complications after hip surgery. She was 87 years old.

Nan was born in San Francisco to Johanna and Pleun Advokaat. She was raised in Santa Cruz and San Jose and resided in Scotts Valley since 1976.

In addition to being a 1944 graduate of San Jose State College, Nan was a secretary for over 25 years at San Jose State and retired in 1988. Nan enjoyed playing bingo and cheering for the SF 49ers. Since 2004, Nan volunteered most Thursdays at the St. Francis Catholic Kitchen in Santa Cruz. She loved animals and her many cats kept her company.

Nan is survived by her five children; Steve (Karen) of Los Gatos, Stephanie Lykam and Margo Gorini (Richard) both of San Jose, Michele Bo of Mt. View and Patrice of Scotts Valley, 15 grandchildren; Danielle and Jenni Joesten; Shauna, Melissa and Scott Lykam; Robbie, Andrew, Mikey, Maggie and Joey Gorini; and Ali, Andi, Mimi and Stevie Bo; her sister, Cornelia "Nell" Advokaat Strohmaier and niece Judy D'Eliscu (Pete) both of Sunnyvale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Joesten in Sept. 2008, her granddaughter, Lisa Lykam in Nov. 1989 and her son-in-law, David Bo in Sept. 2004.

Funeral Mass is on Sat., Oct. 9 at San Agustin Parish, 257 Glenwood Dr., Scotts Valley at 10 a.m. Reception at the church immediately following the service.
