Leonard Goldberg
January 13, 1933 - October 1, 2016
Resident of Mountain View
Dr. Leonard Goldberg died peacefully at home on October 1, 2016. He will be remembered with great love by family, friends and colleagues. His patients knew him as a skilled and compassionate physician. He joined the Sunnyvale Medical Clinic in 1975 and practiced Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease there and at El Camino Hospital until his retirement in 2000.
Dr. Goldberg was highly thought of by his colleagues and patients. He consulted on many difficult cases and was known for his diagnostic skills. He was one of very few physicians who cared for people with HIV/AIDS in the early 1980's when not much was known about the illness. He was called upon to educate his colleagues, members of community organizations, employers, and nursing home staffs about the disease. Not only did he explain the known science about AIDS, he addressed the many fears about the transmission of the virus. Leonard was known as "the doctors' doctor."
Leonard was a member of Congregation Beth Am where he served on the Social Action Committee and the Board of Directors. He reached out to many people with warmth and kindness. He traveled to Israel several times and maintained a lasting relationship with family and friends there.
Leonard enjoyed travel, birding and backpacking into the mountains and deserts of Utah, Arizona and California. His daily pastime of tending to his garden brought him much pleasure. He had an eye for composition and beauty as he landscaped with many varieties of plants and flowers.
What was most precious to Len was his beloved wife Terri, who cared for him gently and tenderly throughout their marriage. Leonard had great love for his family and enjoyed a warm relationship with lifelong friends. He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him so very much.
He is survived by his loving wife Terri, his brother Bernard Goldberg (Molly), his daughter Sharon Kollasch, her children: Jessica Jones (Donnie), Margaret Hoffman (Keith), Benjamin Kollasch (Fei Fei), Great-grandchildren Abbi & Jaxson Kollasch & Lorelei Jones, Olivia & Piper Hoffman. Leonard was dearly loved by Terri's children: Lynn Deutsch (Russell), Catherine Bonetti, Joanne and Christopher Brown, and step-grandchildren: Brendan & Anthony Bonetti and Isaac & Aaron Deutsch.
Memorial Service will be on Friday, October 14 at 2 PM at Congregation Beth Am 26790 Arastradero Road. Los Altos Hills.
In lieu of flowers, make donations to Congregation Beth Am or to Community Services Agency of Mtn View.
