Born in San Juan Bautista, CA, Lucy Toshiye (Okasaki) Matsumoto passed away peacefully at the age of 94. Lucy is survived by husband Ray, married just shy of 67 years; daughter Vera (David Hioki); granddaughter Nicole (Keenan Aitchison); grandson David Santo; and great-granddaughters Eleanor and Veda Aitchison. Lucy, the youngest in her family, was predeceased by her parents, Yasohachi and Miyako Okasaki; and siblings Allyn Okasaki, Ada (Henry) Uyeda, Tom (Mitzie) Okasaki, and Harry Okasaki.
Lucy, at the age of 14, with her family, followed Executive Order 9066 and moved to the Salinas Race Track. They endured living in horse stalls for two months. Then they were sent to the concentration camps in Poston, Arizona, and also Crystal City, Texas. The Okasaki family returned to San Jose, CA after WWII. Lucy worked for a time as a live-in housemaid. Seeking a better opportunity, she studied bookkeeping at Heald's Business College of San Jose. After graduation, she worked at Brian and Ralph Printing Company. Lucy met Ray at the San Jose Buddhist Church YBA, and they married on July 3, 1955. Together, they started Gardenland Power Equipment in 1960. Lucy traveled the world with Ray and friends. She loved golfing and helping at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin for years. Many people remember Lucy for her ever-present smile.
Private services to be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers and other offerings, the family would be grateful for donations in Lucy's memory to Yu-Ai Kai (Japanese American Community Senior Service), 588 N. 4th St, San Jose, CA 95112 or San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, 640 N. 5th St, San Jose, CA 95112.
