Dearest Arthur,

A true friend,
An honest friend,
A gentle friend,
A cherished friend.

I was privileged to know Arthur for many years and valued his wit, his perceptiveness, the way he spoke about art and his deep knowledge of the chemistry of paint and metals, and his love of animals.

I had seen him in the last few days and spoken and e-mailed with him. I will miss him very much.

I am so sorry to learn of Mr. Phillips passing. I had the pleasure of being invited to his home in August because of our shared interest in the Pollock Krasner House and found myself being humbled and honored just to be in his presence. Amongst other things we talked about the meaning of his art or as he would say, its "lack of meaning." He was incredibly talented. His work literally brought tears to my eyes. I'll miss him.
