Paul Appling Obituary

Paul E. Appling Nov. 4, 1926 – Dec. 14, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce Paul peacefully went to be with the Lord on December 14 at the age of 83. He grew up in the Waterford area where he was educated in the one-room Hickman Grammar School and Hughson High in Hughson, California. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served during WWII as a sonar specialist. Following WWII he attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he graduated in mechanical engineering in 1951. He was honored by being asked to sing "The Lord's Prayer" at the graduation ceremony. After graduation, he began his career as an engineer with Johns Manville Corp, Lompoc, CA. Most of his career was spent in Silicon Valley, where he settled and lived the rest of his life in Los Altos. He worked at Sylvania, starting in 1955, and then Teledyne, managing the engineering department and retired in 1994 after 35 years. He later consulted for Intevac for four years. He was active in church work all of his life, volunteering in the chaplaincy program at El Camino Hospital, Mountain View, CA. He loved to travel with his wife and visited many countries. He is survived by Marguerite (Verwer) Appling, his wife of 58 years, and his four children, Sandra, Terry, Ric, and Tanya. He is also survived by 10 loving grandchildren and one great grandchild. Memorial service will be held at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, Menlo Park, CA at 2 pm, on December 22. A reception will follow at the church. The Graveside service will be held at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Hughson, CA at 11 am on January 8th, 2010 and will be open to the public. Paul was much loved and was very highly regarded by family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was a trustworthy, steadfast, godly man. In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul's name may be made to www.mounthermon.org or a check may be sent to Mount Hermon, at Mount Hermon Association, Inc., P.O. Dear Marguerite and family,

I am so sorry to learn (from my mother, Harriet Horning) of your sudden loss of Paul. What a truly good man. I have often thought of my acting experience with his being my father in one of Virginia's plays. I will never forget him. GOD'S Blessings and Comfort at this time.

Margurite,Sandy, Terry, Ric, and Tanya,

We are so very sorry for your loss. Paul was such a wonderful man, husband, and father. My father held him in such high esteem. Mother is so saddened by the news of Paul passing. It brings us both bitter sweet memories of 6 years ago.

Life is a brief passing, but love goes on forever.

May the love of Jesus hold you dear through this difficult time.

With great affection,

Doralyn & Evelyn Hooper

Marguerite, Sandy, Terry, Ric and Tanya. I was so saddened when I heard of the passing of Paul. Our families go way back and I have many vivid memories of him at FBC Sunnyvale. He was a very godly man and I know it gives you comfort to know that he is with the Lord even though you miss him very much. Believe me, I feel your pain. I know you all supported our family in the loss of my dad in 1984 and my mother more recently (2007). Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I may try to stop by and see you if you are available on Sunday as I will be in town. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the service.
