This company and its founders were the stabilizing passion of my life. Contributing unimagined joy and creativity, and a desire to be & give more were key. I will always remember these days with incredible fondness

Mr. Curtis and Shawn were inspirations to me and I have lived my life for art ever since I knew them. I was in West Valley Ballet and then San Jose Dance Theater in the 70's under their direction. And truly...Mr. C's arch was the best in the biz! I think of them both every day. Sweet Shawn...my dearest condolences. Therese Brewer Frankenberg, Chico, CA.

Shawn, I am very sad for your loss. I know that many people will feel that the world is little less bright now that Paul has moved on. I'm very grateful to have known (and danced!) with him. Perhaps Paul and my mother are now reminiscing about old times--she loved working as company manager with both of you. My thoughts are with you and I wish you peace of heart and mind.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Paul Curtis. I had the pleasure of performing in the San Jose Dance Theatre Nutcracker back in 1981 and enjoyed rehearsing and will always keep fond memories of those days.

My mother enrolled me in Paul Curtis Academy of Dance in 1975, the summer before my freshman year of highschool. I have vivid memories of the level of dance I was now studying, and having studied ballet since the age of 4, I felt like this was big time. Ballet is still a huge part of who I am and what I do, and now I'm passing the baton to my little girl, Heidi, who shows promise at the age of 7! Thank you to the both of you - for your teaching, your tolerance, your passion. My memories are with you always...

Dearest Shawn, My heart goes out to you. I cannot even imagine how you must be feeling. The sense of loss must be incredible. Please accept my condolence. Rachel and Natalie are not on facebook, so they cannot write to you through these means. Rachel, most specially, since she was part of Los Gatos and San Jose Dance Theater, is terribly sad at the loss of Mr. Curtis and sends her love and condolence. Natalie, too, sends you her love. You and Paul were such an important part of my family. I have the fondest of memories of you and Paul.
Paul will forever remain a most positive influence in all our lives. He was kind, loving, intuitive, paternal, inspirational, extremely talented, creative, honest and intelligent. Paul played a most important and positive part in Rachel's live and development.
Paul was inspirational. He expected the most and the best from all: the students, parents, volunteers, staff, Board of Directors and community. YOU, were amazing and helped to make "The Best" a reality!
I so loved the productions. It was like a story that unfolded before all our eyes. We started with often raw talent and finished with a beautiful production.
Every December marked a magical season, thanks to the Nutcracker Performances! Natalie and many of her friends were "Cookies" and Rachel strived at improving and having a higher role each year. It was what has helped her to always excel.
The excitement of the producions was contagious for all!
Memories of Paul and YOU will continue to dance in all our heads. In our hearts we all feel love and thanks to both of you.
We applaud Paul for a life well lived that touched the lives of young and old. He is our very own Hans Christian Anderson.

Dear Shawn, I've just returned from Italy to learn the sad news about Paul & weighs on my heart. There is no way to count the myriad experiences & influences that both of you brought to my life as a dancer/performer & as a person. Having lost my father at an early age I realize that you and Paul were my day-to-day male role models which is something I am so grateful for. You were always an inspiring duo: creative, dedicated to dance/theater and, most especially, to each other. I feel how deeply I am shaped by my years in the studio & on the stage every single day! All your work & dreams truly live on. Please know you will always be in my heart & prayers. Love, comfort & thanks- Meredith J. Clark

Shawn, both you and Paul taught me so much. I wouldn't know where to begin, except that they were all life lessons, and to this day I still use them avidly. I will miss him. Please, keep in touch. God Bless you.

Mr. Curtis is a beloved teacher who truly followed his calling and shared his gifts with so many students over many, many years! He REALLY knew how to teach ballet and how to run a great school and company. And, he was a "character" whose manner, stories, and sense of humor, and the knowledge he imparted so skillfully, the corrections he gave consistently and with patience, and his enduring love of dance will continue to be carried in so many of our memories. (I was a student from 1976-1986 and later returned to dance in SJDT's The Nutcracker and Cinderella in 1994-95. I am still dancing today, at age 40, thanks to the foundation in dance that Mr. C. gave me!) Mr. Stuart, I send you my love, my gratitude, and my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Awe Shawn . . . I am so sad at your loss . . . our loss too. I was in the states this summer and had just mentioned to Marie Bourdet, "We should go visit Paul and Shawn." Two days later we heard of his passing and I was so sad I missed seeing him one more time. I wanted to plan another Paul Curtis reunion with Renee, Laura, Jamie, Maria, the whole gang again - the last one was so fun. Remember, we surprised him when we all secretly attended his class - I can still see the smile on his face when he saw us. l loved him and all he did for me as a dancer and a friend. You know it was his full scholarship for me at age 14 that gave me the chance to see who I was as a dancer and the impact it would have on my life. I still remember when he announced me as a company member. Remind me to tell you that story - it was a typical Curtis humor moment! After I left SFB and later SDT, I too became a dance teacher and had the chance to walk in the steps of "the master (Paul)." I OWE SO MUCH TO HIM and the examples he set. He was the best teacher and a true friend. I return to the states next summer and you are first on my list to visit. Much love Shawn as you are in my prayers and Paul rests in my heart always. Hugs, Kathleen Dugan Barton

Mr. Curtis and Mr. Stewart were the reasons why I fell in the love with the Nutcracker, the theater and being a dancer. Mr. Curtis will always have a special place in my heart. I know a lot of the reasons why I am pursuing my dream as a professional dancer today is because of the incredible years of doing the Nutcracker and the impact it had on my life. Rest in peace Mr. Curtis.
Love always,

Mr. C. , I cherish the fond memories I have of you as my ballet teacher (1983-1992). I always felt like you and Shawn cared for us and wanted the best for us. Even though you were sometimes extra tough on us, you were gentle and sweet (minus when you kicked me out of class a few times) (laugh out loud). I appreciated your funny sense of humor and can still see you pointing your foot in your shoes. I continue to attend Nutcrackers every year and I think I can still remember the great choreography. Hard to sit still in my seat!! Thanks for the memories, I will always reserve a special place in my heart for you. Shawn: I am so sorry for your deep loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I think Paul (and you) would be delighted to know that many of us have reconnected over facebook and we look forward to a reunion in Dec. Can't wait! I never went to a HS reunion but I always said I wish I had a ballet reunion with my ol' pals. Seems like that wish may come true! ; )

Paul was an amazing man. He really did so much for me and I wish I could have told him. He gave me the passion for dance and teaching and choreography and performing that I have now. He has inspired me to want to start my own studio and share the love for dance. He taught me so much and I will miss that smile of his! Ballet has made me who I am today and Paul and Shawn's discipline and love for dance has also made me who I am today. I will love him forever.

Mr. Curtis helped me to become the confident person I am today. A public education teacher and ballet teacher! He was loved by all he touched and will be missed. This year the San Jose Dance Theatre Nutcracker is dedicated to him with an alumni reception before the Saturday performance

Mr. "C" .... you were my Snow Prince and I your Snow Queen in the 1972 production of the Nutcracker in downtown San Jose at the old Civic Auditorium. I was fifteen at the time and you believed in me more than myself. Thank you for giving me that chance and one of the most memorable experiences of my life. You and Shawn will always have a special place in my heart. Rest in peace, dear teacher.

Paul was very important in my life; as I studied with him, as well as worked at the Dance Academy for him. He was the sweetest, kindest, generous person I ever encountered. He was not only my boss but my friend. He was a very serious and dedicated ballet teacher - you could tell Ballet was his life. My daughter studied with him as well, from age 6 to 17. I have only fond memories of it all and especially the Nutcrackers and especially that year we transferred over from the Old Civic to the New Arts Center. He was calm and cool and always with the dry sense of humor through it all. What an honor it was to have had him in my life.

My daughter danced for Paul and Shaun in the "80's and eventually was the Snow Queen in the Nutcracker. What marvelous experiences she had while learning from Paul and Shaun and what wonderful productions they created. Paul's vision influenced many young dancers. Thanks for all you did, Paul.

an irreplaceable and delightfully quick-witted, irreverent man. My father figure and mentor who, in tandem with his life-long artistic partner and love, Shawn Stuart, gave me the gift of artistry, integrity, discipline and the technique to back it up. The world feels watered down without him.

All three of my children danced in The Nutcracker, then continued to work backstage for many years. Michael started as a party boy and then was the Nutcracker Prince for 3 years; his last year he had so outgrown the costume that it tore in the middle of the mouse fight!
Paul Curtis and Shawn Stuart ran a class studio for many years. Our Christmases revolved around the SJDT's schedule for all those years. I'm so glad that we have those memories.
Thank you Paul Curtis. We will not mourn your passing - we will celebrate your life through many memories!
