His family moved to the United States where they worked in mining industry in Butte, Montana and Grass Valley, California. he attended a one-room school house in Rough and Ready, California. He had to drop out of school in the 8th grade to work shining shoes and delivering meals down the mine shafts to help his family during the depression.

What a lovely man Mr. Coats was. We have been acquainted with one of his family members and had the nicest visit with Mr. Coats some years ago at his home. We will never forget our visit. A truly hospitable host, he showed us around and we had a chance to talk of life, his family (who he adored) and what a nice legacy he left for all who knew him. Rest in peace Mr. Coats, we left with warm hearts and big smiles on our face after that visit. To the family: please know you are in our prayers. I know he was so proud of all of you!
