Robert O'Neill Obituary

Robert ONeill
Resident of Saratoga
Returning to Syracuse University, after serving in the Pacific for the US Navy in WW2, Robert ONeills father pestered him to take pre-med courses and apply to medical school. He reluctantly agreed, and discovered a career and a calling that would be his lifes joy, family medicine.
Graduating from St. Louis University Medical School, he married Sunie Birdsall. Piling their belongings in a car they drove west to California. Dr. ONeill trained at San Francisco General Hospital and Santa Cruz General, settling in Saratoga, CA. They had five kids and raised them in Argonaut. Baseball games in the front yard, kick the can in the backyard, swim meets, basketball games along with trips to Aptos singing Gay 90s tunes filled the spare time.
First joining Dr. Jack Cox in family practice in a renovated house in downtown Saratoga, he was recruited by the town elders in 1956 to head the Citizens Committee for Incorporation. San Jose kept annexing nearby towns and residents of Saratoga wanted to preserve its special character and rural footprint. They won the close vote and the City of Saratoga was born.
A few years later Bob established his own family practice. Delivering hundreds of babies, doing countless physicals for school sports, listening and tending to thousands more as he provided medical care for almost four decades to South Bay families. Bob was a doctor who did house calls with a black leather bag and one who wept quietly as he told families about a fatal diagnosis or death. He reveled in his ability to help heal when he could.
Longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church Bob helped build the Church Hall, Rectory, Covent and School, which all the kids attended. Later on, aiding in development of the magnificent church on Saratoga Avenue.
Dr. ONeill with a handful of other doctors pioneered the first peer review system for physicians in the State of California in the 1960s; was one of the founders of Lifeguard, a non-profit health maintenance organization and served as Chief of Staff of Good Samaritan Hospital. Bob was a member of the Saratoga Mens Club and Los Gatos Rotary.
In 1975, he married Dorothy Emerson and joyfully added her two daughters to his family. A native of New Castle Pennsylvania he was always proud of his Irish heritage. When he got a chance to finally visit the far away island he noted the warmth of its people and its beauty but smiled that California was perhaps even more beautiful.
Dr. ONeill is survived by his children Patrick (Lori), Maura (Vaho Rebassoo), Megan (Cary Graves) and Michaela (Doug Eikenbary), as well as his stepdaughters, Carol Emerson and Robin Ogden along with ten grandchildren (Finn and Liisa ONeill Rebassoo; Savannah and Madison ONeill; Molly Graves; Conor and Brenna Eikenbary; Aaron and Nathan Odell; Sam Ogden) one great grandchild (Travis Odell); his sister, Dorie Ellis; his first wife, Sunie Creegan and his longtime companion, Ann Hendricsen. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sunie, his second wife, Dorothy and seven brothers and sisters. Come celebrate his life at Sacred Heart Catholic Church 13716 Saratoga Ave on Saturday January 11, 2014 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be sent to Hospice of Valley in San Jose (www.hospicevalley.org)

Dr. O´Neill saved my life many many yrs ago. I was experiencing an etopic pregnancy on Thanksgiving eve. Met me at his Saratoga office dressed in a Tux! Got me into surgery with Dr Snyder and saved me. So very grateful for him.

Dr. O´Neill was our family pediatrician. His first concern was always the welfare of the children. He was a magnificent doctor and a kind human being.

Dr. O'Neill was our family doctor from about 1955 to about 1976. He delivered two of our children. My life was made better by knowing Dr. O'Neill.

I received the notice on my cell phone of cousin Bob's passing too late to attend the services. But thank you so much, Michaela, for remembering to contact me. As you can well imagine, Bob's wonderful personality, singing, humor & wisdom extended to all his Donovan cousins & researchers & to all those he met with us in Ireland and Wales. Bob made our trips far more special with his joy of discovering mysteries. I have posted his obituary on the Donovan-O'Connor Family Reunion Facebook page, & I would like to invite you to join, if you would like. As you likely know, John Donovan Scartagh married Catherine Donovan Bawn in 1841 in Leap's St Mary's church. Their daughter Catherine who married John L. O'Neill was just one of a dozen children we have been tracking all over the United States & also Wales & UK where they wandered. Bob was a big part of that research, because he was your O'Neill's family historian, & he cared about getting it right. My heart goes out to all the O'Neills who were privileged to have this man in their lives as father, grandfather, etc. Please contact me so we can stay in touch. I have Sandy O'Neill's e-mail address I believe. [email protected]

Dr. O'Neill was the first person I met in this lifetime since he delivered me in April of 1956. He was generous to my parents to a fault and even delivered my mother's last child - her 11th - as a bonus. He was an honorary member of our family and was always welcomed there. He and his wife, Sunie, took in and cared for a couple of our family members when are house was destroyed in a fire in 1962. He will be missed, but I am sure he has earned a good place in heaven. Thank you for all you have done for us and so many others. I will always remember him.

Bob was my doctor and my daughter's doctor. He helped me through being a young mother full of anxiety about newborns and showed love and care in doing so. He was a special man. I remember my dad would joke about how Dr
said my sister Anna was on the house since she was the last of 11 children. We all will remember his kindness to our family.

My thoughts are with you during this time of transition. Your father help my mother deliver many of my family members, including me. He was such an key figure in our family. I can still hear his voice, see his smile and feel his tender care from all the visits to his office. My mother and father respected and trusted him and he guided them through so many experiences. We will miss him and always remember him with love and fondness.
