Roy Rocklin Obituary

Fremont Union High School Trustee Roy Rocklin age 69 died on Sunday evening March 19th 2023. The cause was Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare and virulent form of skin cancer. Roy's one regret in life was that he did not use enough sunscreen during his younger years. As a proud descendent of Jewish immigrants who escaped violence and poverty in eastern Europe, Roy was a strong supporter of immigrants seeking a better life in the USA.Roy grew up in Walnut Creek. After graduating from Ygnacio Valley High School, he majored in Chemistry at UC Santa Cruz and went on to earn a PhD in analytical chemistry from the University of North Carolina. After working in industry for twenty-five years designing and developing instruments used in analytical chemistry, Roy switched careers and taught chemistry and physics for ten years at Lynbrook High School. He often said he worked twice as hard for half the money! In 2016 Roy became a politician and in a "landslide" won a position on the Fremont Union High School District Board of Trustees. Roy was a true "Renaissance Man" with a wide variety of interests and pursuits ranging from amateur radio in his teen years, to photography, wine-making, bike riding, visual arts, classical music, genealogy, baseball and all areas of science. Roy followed his interests with a passion and never hesitated to take on a new challenge. As a volunteer for the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation, Roy became an expert in donor base software and worked tirelessly to maintain accurate records for the Foundation. On the personal side Roy met the love of his life piano teacher Marsha through the Classical Music Lovers Exchange in 1982. They spent the next forty plus years making beautiful music together. Marsha's piano performances brought him great joy and he spent countless hours recording and editing her concerts to preserve her musical legacy. Other surviving family members include daughter Rachel Amelia Rocklin and son-in-law Dan Dearborn, son Gabriel Rocklin and wife Jaline Gerardin. One of Roy's greatest joys was becoming a "Zaydie" to their children Natalie and Laura. Roy is also survived by his beloved sister Janet and brother-in-law Richard Katz along with other cherished nieces and nephews. In Roy's honor and memory, the family requests that donations be made to AVID Senior Scholarships thru the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation 589 West Fremont Ave. Sunnyvale, CA 94087 fuhsd.org/academics/academic-support/avid

Roy was my best friend in high school. Life had a way of sending us separate ways. I ended up in Seattle and he ended up in Sunnyvale. I was new to California in 1967 when I decided to join the Amateur Radio club at school. After our first meeting, Roy asked me if he could get a ride home. From that time through our high school years we were best buddies. We spent the summer of 68 playing ping ping, swimming and studying for our Amateur Radio licenses. I am so thankful I was able to see Roy again in 2018. We talked about old times and I took him to see my parents. I will miss Roy. He was a year younger than me but I always saw him as a mentor. He was an amazing person. May the Lord be with his family.

Sad to hear this news of a life long colleague. We attended 1-12 grades together and our Dad's worked together at Shell Development Co.

I never had Mr. Rocklin as a teacher, but I had always heard of how great he was at teaching, and more importantly how kind he was. Sad to hear this news, but reading this makes me certain he lived a full and happy life. We will miss you, Mr. Rocklin!

I am sad of Roy's passing. I met him when my children were in high school in FUHSD and he was a school board member. I remember him as a kind and personable man who kept our school district moving in the right direction.

Roy was an erudite and generous man. He helped beta read two of my novels and made many useful suggestions to improve them. I will be always thankful to have been counted among his friends.

I worked with Roy in the R&D department at Dionex Corporation in Sunnyvale. I am forever grateful for the small book on electrochemistry he wrote and time he spent with me for teaching me the basics of electrochemistry as it applies to what we did at Dionex. With my children having attended HS in the same district I came across Lynbrook students that had a lot of kind words about the quality of his teaching.

Dr. Rocklin was the coolest AP Chemistry teacher ever. What an awesome life he lived, we are all so grateful we got to cross paths with him!
