Going through some old memories and coming upon Rudy's obituary brings me back to hanging out with him at the Bears with him and Gumby his friend. had so much fun with him drinking some cold drinks and listening to his music and sometimes he would let me play an instrument whenever he was at Bob's surf n Turf. Rest in piece my good friend.

We made music (I was on a B-3 and flute) together more than 40 years ago. Circumstances caused me to go back east in 74. I enjoyed playing with you and hoped that one day we would meet up again. As the only non-Spanish speaker (I only knew si, no, quizas, salsa picante, rhythm names and the bad words with a NewYorRican accent) in the band I never found out why the waiters always looked to me to order. RIP my amigo. We'll play together again.

Ay my love my first true love how a day doesn't pass without thinking of us living on Ford avenue and sonny with his "surprises". I remember how you made me a romantic picnic on our front lawn when I came home tired from work. You taught me to love, laugh, and be a better singer. I miss our midnight talks under the stars. I miss your kisses and your laugh and giggles and sheaba scaring gumby! I miss the "crew" coming over and us singing and drinking and loving life but most of all I miss u!

Rudy.........I remember when my uncle John Flores told me that you
were going to be able to sing at my wedding April 8, 1972.......so many
years ago but seems like yesterday to me.........I really think I was more happy that you were going to play at my wedding than getting married!! You had such a presence and I was in awe of you........the songs you sang.......I felt pretty honored that you had come to Fresno
to sing for me............I can still hear your voice singing in my head as if
it was just yesterday.........My entire Flores family as well as I will miss you terribly.........as a voice such as yours comes once in a lifetime..........and I can only say that I was so glad and honored that it was in my lifetime at the most joyous occasion in my life that I was able to enjoy your singing along with your bandmembers............You never thought you were better than anyone else.......always humble. At least to me that is the way you came across..........I can still see you in my thoughts singing...you can not be replaced............you are truly one of a kind........I am so
fortunate that my aunt and uncle were able to have you come to
Fresno for my magical night. What a memory I will have for the rest of my life......thank you.!!!

My deepest sympathies to the Madrid family members. I had the privilege of singing with Rudy for a few years before I returned to my native Houston, TX. Thanks Rudy, for all the vocal coaching, the silly jokes, and for allowing me to be one of the "Cruisettes" in the band. Those are memories that I will keep with me forever -- they were great times! I'm sure you will be greatly missed. But, I suppose now you will be entertaining the angels.

Love to you always.

Please accept my deepest sympathies, to the madrid family. In 1971 John Madrid introduce me to you. He said you are a great guy , and you are. i miss John as i will miss you. Nellie

I must say goodbye to you Rudy as i had to say goodbye to John Madrid.

A sweeter man we've never met
In our hearts we'll never forget!

The angels came to take him home,
Now we are left on earth to roam.

His time was long, yet seemed too short
To memories now i must resort.

For everyone he had a smile
And he loved to sit and talk awhile.

Now in our hearts he still
lives on
Until our time on earth is gone...

Then once again we'll join our
friend
Together in time that will never end!

A Poem for you Rudy and my Dad who loves you like a brother and for me and my family who will always remember your great sense of humor and your dedication to your life long love "Music". You will always be Uncle Rudy and our love for you will never die. Until, we are together again as a family in the presents of our Lord Jesus Christ. I can't wait to see you lined up with the best of the best musician in heaven what a great party that will be!! =)

I'll never forget seeing you every week and my Dad's daily visits to you. I will specially remember you walking in with your guitar in hand and ready to get to work with your God given talent of sharing beautiful music with everyone you came in contact with.

A poem called "If tomorrow starts without me"

If tomorrow starts without me,
And I'm not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me;

I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did that sad day,
While thinking of the many things,
We didn't get to say.

I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too;

But when tomorrow starts without me,
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
And took me by the hand,

He said my place was ready,
In heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away,
A tear fell from my eye,
For all my life, I'd always thought,
I didn't want to die.

I had so much to live for,
So much left yet to do,
It seemed almost impossible,
That I was leaving all of you.

I thought of all the yesterdays,
The good ones and the bad,
I thought of all that we shared,
And all the fun we had.

If I could relive yesterday,
Just even for a while,
I'd be sure to say good-bye,
and give a hug and kiss good-bye,
And maybe see you smile.

But then I fully realized,
That this could never be,
For emptiness and memories,
Would take the place of me.

And when I thought of worldly things,
And those I might miss tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did,
My heart was filled with sorrow.

But when I walked
through Heaven's gates,
It was like being at home,
as my heart began to beat to the sound of music,
Then God looked down and smiled at me,
From His great golden throne,

He said, "My son this is eternity,
And all that I have promised you."
Today your life on earth is past,
But here life starts a new.

I promise no tomorrow,
But today will always last,
And since each day is the same way,
There's no longing for the past.

So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I'm right here, in your heart".

May your music live on in those lives that you touched so deeply.

Much love and respect you Rudy.
Love The Taula Family

Its been 10 days since Rudy's passing and its still hard to beleive he's gone. We do want to say though that this past weekend of events for him and his family were so amazing! From the Tribute at the Rosewater Hall where over hundreds of people and musicians attended and performed, to the service at Oakhill Chapel where again, you couldn't even walk through the doors because so, so many people were there to pay their respects, and the funeral, Oh my gosh we've never seen or heard anything so beautiful. I've known Rudy since the very early 80's and Art's known him for over 30 years. Rudy was such a wonderful person, an amazing and talented musician, singer, songwriter and performer. Art and I will always remember the good times we shared with him whether it was in San Jose or here in Tracy Ca. Rudy would always call to invite us where he was performing and we'd go as long as we weren't performing. We had great times with him. He always amazed me on how quick he can come up with a song to sing or play. He'd ask me "Kelly what do want to sing" and I'd be like "Uh"??? :) He knew thousands!! Rudy was all about having a good time no matter what. We will always respect him and everything thing he did on this earth for everyone. We will always love him for allowing us to be a part of his life and we will miss him and hold a very special place for him in our hearts forever.

My condolences to the Madrid family whom I have known since Rudy and I were sophomores at WC Overfelt HS. We got close when the first MAYO club formed under the wing of Mr. Rudy Ortega, the first Chicano math teacher I ever met. SJS chicanos, like Armando Valdez, Danny Hernandez, Francisco Fernandez, and all those pioneer Chicano college students who told us we could do it. And we did. Rudy asked me to try out for his "band", rehearsing in his garage. I played alto sax and tried to play those James Brown riffs. But he persevered and made it. When we were on the street organizing, he was there with his music to help us fund raise. You walked into a club and right away, if he saw you the band would hit it, and he would recognize you. It was great times, and like they said at his funeral, he was the "sound track" of the SJ Chicano Movimiento. Rudy say hello to all our pals who have preceded you. You will be missed.

My condolences to the Madrid family on the loss of a Rudy.

I was in Rudy's presence only one day: cinco de mayo, 1979. He and the Cruisers played during lunch at Milpitas High School. When the bell for class rang, the students moaned and didn't move. The principal asked Rudy whether he and the Cruisers would mind playing for two more hours. They agreed, and the last two periods were canceled. Rudy didn't charge extra, and seemingly sang every song he knew. He was special.

I remember burying my dad (Robert A Gallego) 6 years ago. Watching, with tears running down my face, I could hear this beautiful music in the background, It was Rudy. The music coming from his guitar that day gave me a bit of comfort, knowing that he felt that my dad was important enough to him to be there and play the music my dad loved. When we got to my Tia's house after the funeral for the reception, There was Rudy again. The sound of magic filling the backyard..Thank You, Rudy, for that. One day we will see you play again. With all my love, Rest in Peace.

Mr Rudy Madrid

Our deepest condolences to the Madrid family, friends and band members....

We became Friends in the 70's and later "Compadres". I was one of two "Best Man" when he married.

"Rudy", was as I would classify as the true "BOHEMIO". The dictionary defines "Bohemian" as..a person (as a Writer or Artist) Living an unconventional life, usually in a colony with others. Where as for "Rudy" the colony was "Life".

He was a free spirit, to go as he pleased and enjoy not so much the rewards of Success....

But to be those "Rewards" for others to enjoy.

I, for one, know he has certainly given his time and gifted talent to many an organization and friendship event.

"Rudy", will be missed. His music will go on.

A short story....
We were at the Copa Inn in San Jose, one day (of many) and I asked Rudy to sing a song with the Mariachi, He sang "Esta Triesteza Mia" ( My Saddness)

Rudy, I said, why such a sad song?

"I first sang the song when I was with my Dad in a bar as a young kid", he replied.

Horale!,
I said and we downed another "I've got time" for one more Bud!

"Esta Triesteza Mia" along with "Cienas de Amor" a song he recorded in the 70's on 45 format will always be memorable for me.

"Cruisin Baby" was his "Reward"

There is more to come as I was with him with my cameras and video many a time.( Check You Tube "Rudy Madrid")
We all will miss him dearly.

Compadre,
"Vaya con Dios"

As I walked into the Dance Hall I heard all this cool Soul, Rock and Oldies Music in which I thought was great , But when He Rudy Madrid and The Cruisers played a Lil' Joe Ranchera , (I Think it was Las Nubes, It totally blew me away . I thought a band that could play a Variety of music and also Mexican Music is Also what I should do. Rudy, you really inspired a young and upcoming chicano , and my outlook on music and what it should be. You always had Great Stage presence , I remember sneaking into one of your willow glen inn jams and seating in the back to hear you play, you would say "Oh Oh " Everybody better put on your sweaters cause Theres a " Cool Breeze " in the house.Thank you Rudy Madrid for Everything you've done Musically and If You Could say Hi to my Brother Tony T. Torres He's a Solid Drummer and my Mom also SHe's got good Harmony skills And also To my band mates Jimmy-Jam Sabala Congas, drums all percussion, Richard Herrera Sax, Ray Yee , Bass and Ron Lopez , Bass and Trombone ,to name a few. I know I will see you soon, I tip my 40 to your Memory....

With all My Respect,

Albert S. Torres

When I heard of your passing, I felt as if a part of my youth went with you. I met you in 1976 through your brother Sonny and later through a good friend of mine (Joanie Porres) who sing with your band for several years... you will be missed but your music will live on in our hearts and memories... My condolences to your family and friends... Rest in Peace!

Rudy was a great guy. I met him many years ago working as an agent at Kaleidoscope Music. Little did I know our paths would intertwine and cross over many years.
Rudy was a talent, he was also the guy that once you met him, he was a friend forever. He was always happy to see you ready to stop and catch up on your life, and let you know what was going on in his.
If you were in the music business in this area whether it was Latin, Rock, Soul, or whatever the genre, you probably knew Rudy, and he probably knew you. He loved all music and all people it seemed.
He was many things artist, entertainer, musician, and yes a character, that was endearing and talented. He is one of the people that will always remain in my heart and mind from my years in the industry.
My condolences, thoughts, and prayers go out to Rudy's family. He was a wonderful guy, and he will be missed.

Our condolences to Rudy's family, our prayers are with you all. Rudy was part of my family memories. He played at our family parties, parents funeral services, nieces quincenera, wedding and at our wedding reception in 1994.What a awesome performance by Rudy and his band at Zorba's in San Jose. He came into our lives through my brother Louie and Jenny Gonzales, godfather to my nieces, Stephanie and Rochelle. I loved to hear his stories of his past experiences as a musician. I told him , Rudy, you should write a book. One summer weekend, we brought him to our home in Rancho Murieta Ca and he seranaded us all night while we drank Yonan fine wine. We have great memories of following him through San Jose when he played at local bars, lodges, restaurant bars, had lots of fun and danced all night to cumbias, oldschool music. You'll be forever in our hearts.

Our deepest and most sincere sympathy is with the family during this very difficult time. Rudy has been a part of the tapestry of our life for the past thirty-five years. He has been there for the happy times, for the sad times; and for the times when we just needed to smile. With his god given talents he brought music into our everyday lives and made us sing and dance and for just a moment we could forget about whatever was on our minds and just be happy! We will remember him always and he will be missed by many.
Our hearts and prayers are with you,
Connie Aparicio-Yañez and Alfonso Yañez

"Rudy's talent and voice, was amazing. A shy man that could belt out a tune and get the dance floor-hoppin... A voice that could rival any big star musician of long-ago and today. Rest in peace our friend, and know that you made the world a better place.

Rudy, you will be miss but not forgotten. You made my expeience at San Jose State a memorable one. Had some good parties, The Chicano Cultura was born. Teatro De La Gente, El teatro Campesino, Daniel Valdez,Rosana De Soto, EOP, MAGS, Que Viva Cesar Chavez! The Chicano movement was off the hook we made history, we educated, not only SJSU, but the community in San Jo . We had some good times , the parties was everlasting, but some how we were ready for the next gig, or protest. Your music ,talent and and your total personality will be miss. Your in God's hands now. You are legend of San Jose and will never be forgotten. Love Estella Nanez,(Shorty) Eastside, Overfelft H.S, San Jose State University. C/S, "Las Bluesman De San Jo"

Rudy was the first one to talk to me about going to San Jose State. He was recruiting for EOP through a program called New College. I knew Rudy for over 40 years, and like most of us, enjoyed his friendship, his music and his company. I think I'll keep his number on my cell phone anyway.

My condolences to the family. Over the years I enjoyed many of Rudy's gigs and playing sessions. Rest in peace.
