Stephen Keller Obituary

Authorities investigating a boating accident that killed a San Jose man at Lake Tahoe during the weekend say alcohol does not appear to have played a role in the tragedy.
The victim of the accident has been identified as 46-year-old Stephen Joseph Keller.
Placer County Sheriff's Sgt. Dan Ingalls says Keller was a passenger in a motor boat near Tahoe's west shore when he fell overboard on Saturday and was struck by the boat's propeller.

Hello my name is Thomas Griiffin. I´m not sure how to approach this. I was a witness to you deceased husbands death. I have thought of you and yours for 13 years. I can´t imagine what you have gone thru over the years. You and your children. I want you to know,I didn´t know your husband, but I think of him everyday of my life. I hope you have found peace. My ER nurse friend jumped in the boat, and did everything she could. I´m so sorry. It was a life altering day for me, I can only imagine what you have been through. If for any reason my phone number is 5304123907. My email is gromtiffin73@ gmail.com.

I met Dr.Keller at O.H.S.U . He made such a wonderful impression on me. My 3 yr old son was one of his first patients. I've thought of him from time to time and was so sad to hear of the news, but not surprised to see how loved and adored he was. He was so witty and relaxing to be around. I wish I had gotten the chance to have known him better.

Your distance relatives, The Hermanns-cousins of Steve's Mom from Missouri- want to send their condolences after just recently hearing about the death of Steve when the annual Christmas photo and note were not received from Steve this year, 2011. Steve spent some time in St. Louis MO during his college years and he joined the Hermann family one Thanksgiving at the farm in MO and went to a family wedding while living in MO. He continued to keep in touch after that visit and each year the annual Christmas photo card came. When it did not come this year - Anna Marie (83) knew something was wrong. When we heard the news we were deeply saddened. He was kind and gentle-hearted and will be missed. God bless you and your family and know a angel is now watching over you. Your distant cousins from Missouri...

It still hasn't sunk in yet that the vibrant, energetic guy is in heaven. People with Dr. Steve's combination of skill, character, and outstanding personality are rare in life. I had the pleasure of working with him for a short time, but he was the most amazing dentist I had ever met! Dr. Steve and I had a beautiful time the day I left on maternity, just 2 weeks before he passed. He took me to lunch and shared the best baby stories ever! Gave me some good advice and a Huge hug :) I will never forget that day. Dr. Keller you will be missed, but your memory will always live among all of us!! Loni, Branden, and Sydney, my thoughts and prayers are with you. My sincere condolences to you Dr. James, Mrs. Keller and the entire Keller and Schultz families.

I loved going in for my appointments and will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I was deeply saddened by the shocking news of Steve's passing away. We had attended many courses together and I had the privilege of being one of his Fellowship examiners for the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain. His excitement and enthusiasm in describing the treatment he had used to alleviate the chronic pain his patients had presented with was rare, genuine and refreshing. We had a great conversation about life, goals and what is really important at dinner one night after a conference. He was always kind and willing to help out in any way he could whenever called on. He will be greatly missed.

We are in shock. We literally just heard as we opened up our vacation mail, having just returned from a trip out of state.
Dr. Keller was indeed an inspiration to us all. His quick smile, professional, practical & state of the art dentistry, kindness and many other fine traits made coming to the dentist a pleasure.
He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to the family and office staff.
Sincerely,

I so am saddened to hear about Dr. Keller. Going to him was the first time I have ever had fun going to the dentist. He and his entire practice were kind and professional. I worked at Downtown College Prep where we called him the DCP dentist - most of the staff went to see him and would recommend him to any new staff. I send my condolences and sympathies to his family and friends.

I just received the letter today of this tragic news. I am so sorry for the family of Dr Steve. Dr James was my dentist since I was a young girl. Then Dr Steve was my dentist and my sons dentist. I moved from the bay area to the Central Valley and would still come on Saturdays to Dr Steve. Then one day he said he was closing on Saturdays so he could be at home with his young family. I was so saddened by this but completely understood.Dr Steve and I kept in touch because he was so interested in the progress of my son.(Who was also his patient)My son grew up right before his eyes and went to college at UCSD on a swimming scholarship. Dr. Steve was the best. Please extend my greatest sympathy to Dr James Keller as he was my dentist since I was a little girl. Let him know I am still proudly wearing his fillings in my teeth from 35 to 40 years ago when he put those filling in.
Much Love and sympathy, From The Rice Family.

I was shocked beyond words when I received a letter about Dr. Stephen's passing.
I had always dreaded going to the dentist during my childhood years and into my adult years. Until someone recommended Dr. James and Dr. Stephen. After making them my regular dentists, I always looked forward to my dental appointments with them. They were like family and when I went in for my appointment, we would tease each other and laugh a lot. Dr. James and Dr. Stephen and staff were the cream of the crop! And they still are, even with Dr. Stephen's passing.
Dr. James and Dr. Stephen made sure there were closed captions on the ceiling TV. I could watch the TV with closed captions while they worked on my teeth. (I am deaf)
After moving to Citrus Heights, Ca. from San Jose, I tried to keep them as my dentists, but the drive was too long for me.
Thank you to the Keller family for letting us have the best dentists in the area and beyond. You and the staff are in my prayers. God bless and comfort you.

I worked with Steve a number of years and all of that time, I never took the time to get to know him very personally. So a decade later, I was thrilled when he extended a Facebook friend invitation. Through Facebook, I got to know his fun side, and see all of the lovely photos of gorgeous wife Loni, and beautiful Sidney and Branden. Having lunch with him several months ago, I got to see what an incredible dentist he had become. But then, I remembered that he was always an incredible dentist with a calming chair-side manner and good looks that made him so popular. As I drove by Steve's office on Monday August 29, and unaware of what had happened, I thought I should stop and say hi. When I saw the headlines online on Tuesday morning, I was in complete shock. A vibrant young dentist, full of ideas, and a devoted dad and husband. Steve, if I didn't appreciate you enough when I knew you, I am telling you now...you were one awesome dude. Blessings to you and your family.

I'm still in shock after receiving a letter in the mail. My prayers go to Dr. Steve's family and close friends. He was an amazing person!

September 3, 2011

The great thing about Steve was his ability and enjoyment in speaking about other things besides dentistry. I would frequently engage him on topics and he genuinely showed interest. Since he was an Archbishop Mitty graduate, where my two children attend high school, that came up from time to time.

I remember one time when another dentist had tried to get me to do some treatment that sounded strange to me I went to his office late one afternoon and he took the time to call the other dentist's office and discuss the situation. Needless to say, I immediately stopped going to that dentist's office and returned to Steve even though it was not covered on my insurance.

He really cared about the well being of his patients!

I'm 38 years old and, for the most part, have never had another dentist other than Dr. James and Dr. Steve.

In the last few years I would rearrange my work schedule every six months to make the trip from San Francisco/Alameda down to San Jose. In many ways, spending two hours in the car to go to the dentist felt ridiculous. But, visiting the office and getting to spend a few minutes chatting with Dr. Steve always outweighed any inconveniences. I always appreciated his positive demeanor and looked forward to catching up with him and sharing a few laughs or stories.

In a very real way, I grew up with Dr. James and Dr. Steve. My heart goes out to all of the Kellers. Know that his care, personality and smile touched many many people and will never ever be forgotten. I'm deeply saddened to never sit in his chair again, but deeply grateful to have had the privilege of being his patient.

It's so hard to believe Steve's gone since my daughter and I just saw him for check ups last month. He's been our dentist for as long as I can remember, and before that his dad was my parent's dentist. He always had a way of putting you at ease, especially someone like me who hates needles and can be very "difficult", to say the least. His sense of humor is what made it bearable and kept me coming back.
He will be greatly missed by our family.
My thoughts and prayers to you and yours.

September 3, 2011

I was shocked and saddened to hear this devastating loss. My deepest condolences to the family and his great staff. I am sorry for this lengthy way of saying “good-by” to my favorite doctor. You have to understand the history and the first time I met this great doctor. I was a special patient with high priority by the dentistry board. I had surgery that went bad and left me with horse teeth in my mouth. Dr. Keller was the only professional dentist who reached out to handle my case after I was rejected by several dentists. The risk was too high! Dr. Stephen Keller called me into his office and did the research on the procedure before he reached a decision. Dr. Stephen Keller had reconstructed and restored the damage so I could eat again. I had to go through rehab with him to allow trust in another dentist again. I was a mess and a rebellious patient. I was a public figure and lost my job.
Every time, I walked in the office, it caused me to shake with fear. He would encourage, strengthen and tell me...that it is going to be okay. He was an educator, patient counselor and a role model. I would tell him “…I’m sorry for given you a hard time!” He never reacted to my conduct. He kept the same disposition of gentleness each time. I used to runaway and always came back crying…my teeth, it hurts! Please, help me! He was always there for me. He adopted me as his "favorite" patient because of what we had to endure. If it would work or not. He would upload special music just for me. I had my own room with a view and a T.V. A man with integrity and respect! Such a greathearted person, I will miss him so much. He worked on his plan for my treatment and kept his promised. After three years, I had finally graduated in 2010 because he brought an end to the pain and fears. Everyone was happy! You did it doctor and I am forever grateful to you, Doctor K! I was his miracle patient and he was my hero! I was able to eat again. I am talking about the best in this business. His office had the most beautiful pictures on the walls that I felt a sense of peace when I looked at them. He truly had the fruits of the Spirit: kindness, joy, peace, love, goodness, faithfulness and plenty of patience with self-control. He would make everyone laugh in the office when he called out my name. I was his “runaway patient” because of him. I will always remember the joy from his eyes, the laughter and the smile of his accomplishment. I was his masterpiece. I used to cry everytime that I looked in the mirror about my teeth. I had stopped looking in the mirror but when that special day came. Dr. K stated "...Are you ready?" It was like a candle of joy with a smile so bright. When I smile, I will always think of Dr. K. that lighted up this broken patient's hope and dreams. I told him afterward, we should write a book like "Helen Keller" since he already had the last name. ("Keller") I am now very successful because of my hero Dr. K! When I smile it is a gift that Dr. K. left within me. I have a precious love of respect for him. "May he rest in peace." My prayers are sent forth to you, Dr. K, family and staff. Remember, all the lives he touched and influenced because of his love for his patients. I don't want to think about his departure but cherish the teasure of a great smile and a kind doctor.
I receive great complements on my smile today!

We are so sorry and sad about this tragedy. We've been patients of Dr. Keller since he started the practice for we also have been patients of his father, James. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

My wife and I were stunned when we received the letter from Dr. Steve's office notifying us of this tragedy. We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and all of the wonderful people who work at the practice.

I think the greatest compliment I can pay Dr. Steve is that while I didn't know him outside of his practice, I still considered him a friend.

Steve was my colleague and friend. Our practices are next door to each other. We shared so much in common as dentists that it was such a blessing to have Steve as a neighbor. We constantly helped each other out with the day to day stresses and demands of dental practice. It was always great to have Steve pop into my office after work. Sometimes we would end up talking in the parking lot after work for 45 minutes or more. I am going to miss not having the great person and friend that Steve was. It still hasn't sunk in yet that the vibrant, energetic guy I spoke with last week is in heaven. People with Steve's combination of skill, character, and outstanding personality are rare in life. It is clear that Steve touched thousands of people in his life. Loni, Branden, and Sydney, my thoughts and prayers are with you. My sincere condolences to you Dr. James and the entire Keller and Schultz families. Steve will always be missed and forever remembered.

I am so sad to hear about Dr. Steve. I was shocked when I received the letter telling me what had happened. My grandchildren loved him and he will be dearly missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family. Thanks to his sister Julie for introducing me to him. I was so afraid of dentists, but Dr. Steve was the best!

I was looking for a dentist who was experienced in working with children as my 3 were very young. A friend with a young child referred us to Dr. Stephen Keller, she said make sure it is the young one! Our son was an infant and the girls a little older. Dr. Keller saw the girls and then even though the baby was not ready for the dental chair....he took the time to get to know him and welcome the family to the practice. That was 17 years ago. He took extra care working with each childs unique personality and individual needs. Our trips to the dentist were like visiting family. Always catching up on the lastest ongoings.

Steve will be greatly missed by our family.

I met Steve through his younger sister Julie way back when we were young and in college. He was such a funny and crazy guy and always the LIFE of the party. He would come up with the best practical jokes. I just realized he was born on April Fool's Day so now I get it! Those college years ended and Steve began to build a successful business, marry a beautiful wife, Loni, and become a great dad to Branden and Sidney. I was there for all those wonderful milestones. Steve was always very passionate and driven for what he wanted out of life and it showed. Through these entries I can see he has touched so many lives with his kindness and sense of humor. I miss Steve terribly and feel like I have lost a brother. I am mad and sad that he had to be taken from this earth so soon and that the Keller Family has to experience this tragedy. Through faith, love and support of family and friends I know the sadness will eventually lessen. My sincere condolences to the entire Keller Family. I believe Steve is looking down on all of us with that great smile of his. He would not want us to be sad. I am looking back up saying thank you Steve for being you!

I am crushed. A great dentist, a warm friend, a fellow Mac user, ( and my computer student!), Steve was someone I always looked up to. His loss leaves a huge vacuum. My deepest condolences to His Wife and children.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Dr. Steve the other day first when my brother called me and told me what happened and then I read it in the Local Section in the SJ Mercury. I started going to then his father Dr. James Keller back in the late 1980s 1988 around that time as my brother had been going to then Dr. James Keller for some time and my brother recommended him to me and I have been going there every six months for my complete dental care including check-ups, teeth cleaning, x-rays of my teeth and gums as well as new white fillings that blend in with my teeth and over all I was very comfortable knowing that my teeth and gums looked good and I have continued going every six months when his son Dr. Steve took over when his Dad Dr. James Keller retired and Dr. Steve and his staff moved into a new office on North Bascom Ave in San Jose some several years ago. It had state of the art technology and the patient chairs in the rooms there were very comfortable. I really got to know Dr. Steve and his staff very well. I always looked forward to my appointment visits there with then Dr. Lee and in most recent past years Michelle and they all took good care of me and gave me some helpful tips to how to take better care of my teeth. I felt very relaxed at my appointment visits there. Dr. Steve will always be remembered. To all of his staff, my thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Steve and his family.

Our sadness cannot be expressed for Steve's family. Based on his faith, I know that Steve is now at peace, I hope that the same faith can help his family find acceptance with time.

We met Steve through Loni, and although he was our wonderful dentist, my warm memories of him are primarily through his impact on her. I will remember how happy he made her, and how committed and loving he was as a father and husband.

Loni, your family is a model of loving support and commitment. What your marriage was robbed of in longevity it made up for in quality. Steve will never be gone as he lives on in the lessons he passed on to Sidney and Branden about loving life and caring for people. You are so blessed to have had him in your life, and in his passing, may you be blessed with the support and love of the family and friends who all hold the same love for him.

We love you. The Vis Family.

I just told my neice and nephew and stepchildren LAST week that I love going to the Dentist because my Dentist is so fun, hip, cool and positive! I can't believe he is gone. My heart goes out to the family; such a sudden loss. Prayers and positive thoughts to the Keller family. Stacie Puma

Loni, Brandon, Sidney and the entire Keller family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Steve's tragic accident. I had met Steve years ago and he always had a smile on his face. It was a nice surprise to see him, and his family, again last fall when our sons were on the same NJB team. This loss will be felt by many as his reach was far. My heart and prayers are with you and your family.

My daughter and I had been a patient of Dr. James for many years and then Dr. Steve once Dr.James retired. Once my daughter moved to Los Angeles for college she continued to fly up just to go to Dr. Steve. I was saddened to hear about this terrible loss of Dr. Steve. My thoughts and prayers to his entire family.

Like all tragedies, something good must come of it. Aside from superior talent and professionalism, Dr. Keller was a humble, loving, intelligent, and compassionate person. Many of us knew him through his practice, so our interactions were limited to those precious moments we all cherished and looked forward to spending with him and his eccentric, yet friendly staff (with clients, of course!) Still, I love them all, dearly - really. They also kept Dr. Keller on his toes(and for good reason). Try putting 10 women in close proximity and working many hours alongside each other: all veiled hissing & claws, OMG! Poor Dr. Keller. All kidding aside, I, like many of you who knew Dr. Keller, have that little seed of respect and love for him that we will always carry within. Right now, it hurts, it chokes us up inside, and causes us to hope, wish, and desire a retroactive intervention to prevent the loss, but when it is our time, it is our time. Our well wishes and offers of condolence are in part generated for our own, selfish benefit - really. For many of us, we are trying to cope with this tragic loss by grasping onto something to make sense of this nonsense, and it is all we know. I urge all of you who are suffering and in pain, to consider what would Dr. Keller say about all this ---- working through a difficult loss. I can see him already, pressing his lips together, nodding his head sideways ever so gently, blinking his eye lids and then, letting out a sigh of relief as he would share his take on things (followed by a smile, of course!) Initially, I hesitated to write in this guest book, because I thought I would be at a loss for words. Luckilly, after reading everyone else's comments, it really pushed some sensitive buttons within: hitting me like waves. It hurts now, but I feel relief for him, in a weird way. I also feel the fear, pain, void, and confusion his absence has left in the minds and souls of his loved ones... Seeing another dentist for my oral care feels like I am cheating on Dr. Keller, you know... Weird, I know, but my respect and trust of Dr. Keller remains... He outperformed his contractual and professional obligations - going supersonically (is that a word?), above and beyond... Where or who would Dr. Keller go to for his oral health care needs? Right now, I have a hard time driving past the clinic. I avoid it all costs. It's too soon for me. Thank you all for your continued support and love for Dr. Keller and his family. You and I know he is immensely grateful to us all.

My deepest condolence towards the Keller Family. My wife and I were shocked and saddened by the news that Steve had left us. We first met Steve when I was looking for my first dental private practice about 7 years ago when he was selling practice without patients good well. He was very honest and analytical about my situation and my best option. I ended up not purchasing his practice. My wife and I thanked him for what he has done for us simply being honest. We had became friends since then. I have participated his TMD study group. I have shared, and learned a lot from Steve. I especially remembered how excited I were to go to his new office to expand my TMD horizon. He was always kind and helpful. He was someone who I really trust and love to be friend with. We will miss him dearly.

I've known Dr.Keller for the past 6 years. He was one of my first clients to use my Dental Staffing Service. I had the pleasure of getting to know him and what exactly he needed in a staff member. He always wanted top notch people just as we all know he was. A great employer, client and friend. Our prayers are with you Steve. My condolences to the Keller family and all the wonderful staff at the office.

Julie, it has been such a very long time since we have spoken. My cousin Dina Mark told me about Steve. You and your family have been in my prayers and thoughts for days. I remember your brother and always having a "crush" on julie's older brother when we were growing up. Even back then he was all smiles. You and your family are in my prayers. I will continue to pray for you all.

I never met Steve, yet I knew him well. Let me explain. There is a place called Dentaltown, where tens of thousands of dentists go to learn and share. I have discussed with him many of his cases that he shared, and he was there to lend a hand in many of my treatments as well. Steve was a very bright and skilled practitioner. We shared a love of many areas of dentistry, from sleep issues to orthodontics, and his care for his patients shone through, as did his incredible sense of humor. Tens of thousands of dentists all around the world are shocked and saddened. Prayers from every state in the union and hundreds of countries around the world are being said for Steve's family. He will be missed. Tom Schoen DDS Wabasha MN
