Robert James Romer
Robert (Bob) James Romer, 73, of Eveleth, Minn., passed away at home on Monday, June 24, 2024, with his wife Kathy by his side, following a 4-year battle with cancer.
Bob was born in Virginia, Minn., on January 1, 1951, to Alfred P. "Shorty" and Bertha "Berts" (Angove) Romer. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1969. He pursued his education at Mesabi State Junior College and Eveleth VoTech. Bob met Kathy (Redmond) in 1972 while "bombing the drag" in his '55 Chevy. They spent many hours in the garage working together on his cars (he also loved his '60 Chevy ~ Remember those flames he designed and painted on the cars himself?!) They were married August 25, 1976, at Resurrection Church in Eveleth.
Bob was a self-taught man and could fix anything. He was employed by Malton Electric as a painter for several years. He then worked for EvTac from 1976 as a production truck driver and crude ore train loader until he retired in 2003.
Bob was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. While our hearts mourn the loss, we take comfort in knowing he is now at peace. In his final weeks, he was able to spend a considerable amount of time with family and friends and shared his pride for his loving wife, children and grandchildren and had a sincere appreciation for his extended family, friends and in-home hospice staff.
Bob loved the outdoors! He spent his free time at the rustic cabin on Pelican Lake, the work farm as he liked to call it. It provided many great memories for the family. He lived his life the best he knew and was able: an avid sportsman (favorites included waterfowl & grouse hunting, and crappie fishing), a muscle car, stock and drag car racing enthusiast, a passionate model railroader, and also a workaholic with hints of perfectionism. He was always determined to see a smile and his sense of humor (often flirting with zany) delivered just that.
Bob is survived by Kathy, his devoted wife of 48 years, and sons: Ryan (Spring) of Ham Lake, Allen (Kendra) of Cambridge, and Reid (Katy) of Vadnais Heights; grandchildren: Louis, Leo, Lillian, Addison, Claire, Paetyn and Maren; brother Richard (Winston Welch); brothers-in-law: Eric Olson, Pat McCarthy; Redmond brothers-in-law: John (Dianne Gundy), Tom (Sonjia), Peter, Steve (Deb), Mark (Marianne), Keith (Cheryl), Scott, Glenn, Marty (Sheri), sisters-in-law: Chris (Vic) Thielke, Marilyn (Mark) Rossman, Heidi (Paul) Munter, Rita (Kevin) Kealy, Kelly Pudlick (Damon Ford) and numerous extended family and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Betty Olson, Susan Romer-Harris (Phil), Peggy Romer-McCarthy; his in-laws Jack & Mutsie Redmond; and sisters-in-law Midge Redmond, Louise Redmond and Peggy Redmond (infant).
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Essentia Health East Range Hospice team for their excellent care and support.
