Bernard Carreira Obituary

Emmett - Surrounded by his family, Bernard Benedict Carreira, age 79, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at his home in Emmett, Idaho. Bernard was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was born April 18th, 1946 to Lucy and George Carreira in Honolulu, Hawaii. As a young man, Bernard served in Vietnam in the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Upon returning home, he continued to serve as a drill sergeant at Fort Ord in California. After completing his military service and not one to sit still, he kept busy baking and decorating wedding cakes, gardening, and helping those in need. Caring for others was Bernard's passion. Whether lifeguarding, preaching, directing 100s of students at Foursquare Church camps, or supervising Los Prietos Boys Camp, Bernard's love for people never wavered. Receiving his International Church of the Foursquare Gospel Ministerial License was one of the highlights of his life. He will be lovingly remembered by Janice, his wife of 56 years, their children, Lalena and Bernie, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and sister Mary Christie Carreira Arban, along with countless extended family members and friends. Bernard is preceded in death by his sister Diane Burnadette Cross. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 11am at Heritage Christian Church in Emmett, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, Janice would love to hear your special memories of Bernard in the coming months. Correspondence can be sent to Janice Carreira, P.O. Box 262 , Emmett, ID

We met Janice and Bernard 2 years ago. My husband loves anything military and old things, stopped by their house in Sweet to meet them and ask about their bunk house in the yard that had been bugging my husband. They clicked immediately. I finally got to meet them myself at church in Ola and it was instant friendship from there. Janice had asked me to clean the house once a week as I was a housecleaner in the area and also had previous caregiving experience, so while cleaning I would help her watch Bernard whatever else she needed. A few fond memories are when Kevin brought his 5 ton over to pull the bunk house home, Janice requested he leaves the 5 ton there a few days for Bernard to admire during their anniversary. Bernard had a huge smile and we were always making sure it came out. If anyone could make Bernard talk or smile, it was Kevin. The other fond memory I had myself was last summer planting the countless strawberries Janice got, while I was doing that, I looked up and saw them both on the walk path enjoying each other and I thought to myself, how I adore seeing that wonderful example of endless love they both poured out to each other. The Bee gees came on the radio and I got up and did "the dance" and they caught me. All I could do is laugh and carry that little moment on, not knowing it would turn into a huge one in the near future. Janice and Bernard were our prayer warriors and prayed constant for us as we traveled last summer in the Midwest and also my oldest who has seizures. I would request prayer for the good and bad days and I knew we could count on them to pray. We have adopted each other's family as our own and I wouldn't have it any other way. Rest In Peace Bernard. You will be dearly missed by the Hales. Driving by the Sweet house will never be the same.

Mr. Carreira´s life was a life of love and honor. He was one of my amazing supervisors at LPBC. One memory I have of Mr. Carreira, some incoming boys would be told by the seasoned boys "Don´t awol on Mr. Carreiras shift. He will hunt you down, He will find you."

From the Mr. & Mrs. Vega and their children Erma, Elena, Javier, Jr, Sylvia, Gracie, Lupe and Janie with our dearest condolences. We were your neighbors in Santa Maria, CA. We lived in Tunnell ST, just across the street from you. We will always remember our dear neighbors. Bernard had a beautiful heart, as you did Jan. I, Sylvia, babysat for you in your younger days. Lalena was just a little thing. You two were always so cool. I remember your swinging bamboo chair in the living room and your hanging beads that separated the living room to the kitchen. You both were such wonderful neighbors. My sister Erma was your son Bernie's counselor in high school, so got to see him. God bless you and your beautiful family.

Mr. Carreira. What an awesome person he was to everyone around him. Godly man that he was. I had the good fortune to know him as my supervisor at Los Prietos Boys Camp for many years, and also at SMJH, where he worked part time after retirement. I´ve always enjoyed his humor and good nature. His quick wit and common sense approach to most everything made working under his direction pretty easy. I really liked seeing him around! Talking to him about the Lord was an added perk. I honestly was thinking about Mr . Carreira only yesterday...been watching Netflix documentary on Vietnam. I recall driving out of camp very late one night and passing near his house by the bridge...I nearly ran into a humongous black bear crossing the road! I was concerned that he went toward Mr. Carreira´s house, so I frantically called him to tell him! He just calmly said, "Oh, well I´ll go outside n take a look at him...lol"
That was Mr. Carreira- he never took things or himself too seriously. Yes indeed, he was a beautiful soul! Condolences to his family who for sure will miss him tremendously! May he rest peacefully with our Lord.

I worked with Bernie for eleven years at LPBC and continued to do transports with him after we both retired as Extra Help Officers. One of the finest men I have ever known. His work in Heaven is just beginning now and those of us who know the Lord Jesus will join him one day. I was actually just thinking about him yesterday. Prayers for the family.

Hi this is Jim Clark who worked with Bernard at the Los Prietos Boys Camp. Bernie was a great leader who was fair, firm and consistent while supervising the troubled youth. The program helped thousands of youth turn around to the right path and success. Bernie was fun with a great sense of humor that was contagious. He will always be respected, loved and missed by the probation department family.

Bernard was hugely important in my journey to accepting Jesus and my early years as a Christian. He and Jan were so loving and caring people. He was a wonderful example of what a Christian should act like.
My deepest thoughts and sympathy to Jan and the family.
