GEORGE A. BURCHETT
1925 - 2016
George Anthony Burchett, 91, of Emmett, Idaho, after fighting cancer, passed away on September 1, 2016 at his step-daughter's home. George was born on January 1, 1925 in Clovis, New Mexico to Jess and Nelly Sweeney, Burchett. George was the sixth of eight children.
George started school in Kansas City, Kansas in 1930. He moved back to Dixon, New Mexico for the 2nd - 5th grade then to Santa Cruse, New Mexico for 6th -7th. He finished grade school in Farmington, New Mexico in 1939. The family moved to Emmett, Idaho in 1938 where he finished High School and graduated in 1942.
George went to Spokane Telegraph School to learn Railway Telegraph. World War II took him into the U. S. Army in June of 1943 and he was assigned to the Transportation Core in the 725th RY Operations, Battalion. He served for two years in India, transporting supplies to China.
George returned to Emmett, Idaho and sold insurance as well as was a bartender (45 years). He married Irene Surber on October 6, 1964 and with that he also became a step-father of her three children: Teresa, Terria and David.
George loved to garden, fish, travel, make wine and spend time with his family and friends.
George was preceded in death by wife, Irene Burchett; parents, Jess and Nellie (Sweeney) Burchett; three sisters: Eleanor Gratzer, Margret Pancow and Jessie Corn; two brothers: Lawrence Burchett and Vincent Burchett and stepson, David Surber.
George is survived by brothers: Clarence (Evelyn) Burchett of Temecula, California and Charles (Jean) Burchett of Draper, Utah, along with many, many nieces and nephews (to many to name); his step-daughters Terria L. Quenzer of Emmett, Idaho and Teresa D (Kirk) Thiel of Twin Falls, Idaho; step-daughter-in-law, Roma (David Surber) Hawes, of Boise, Idaho; step-grandchildren: David P. (Kodi) Quenzer of Emmett, Idaho, Shawn Walker of Emmett, Idaho, Klay (Danielle) Maxwell of Meridian, Idaho, Todd Raper of Seattle, Washington, Sara (Nate) Kenyon of Layton, Utah, Rick (Alicia) Surber of Boise, Idaho and great step grandchildren: Lacy Jane Quenzer of Emmett, Idaho, Lexie Lee Quenzer of Emmett, Idaho, Dallie Virginia Quenzer of Emmett, Idaho, Sydney Marie Mallard of Boise, Idaho, Abby Green of Boise, Idaho, Katie Green of Boise, Idaho, Ryan Raper of Seattle, Washington, Parker Maxwell of Meridian, Idaho, Robby Maxwell of Meridian, Idaho and Ava Mae Surber of Boise, Idaho.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Heart 'N Home of Emmett, Idaho, Catholic Church Members: Father Oscar, Alan & Cindy Shaber, Renee Housley, Anita Baltazor, John Harshman, Kathy Willard, Alice Moore, Kathleen Koskello, and Al Dimmick (all of Emmett, Idaho), Nephew: Steve Kiser, of Weiser, Idaho and friend, Jessie Chastain, of Meridian, Idaho. They all have been a wonderful help and inspiration during the past year.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a Rosary at 10:00 AM and the Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Emmett Cemetery. Services are under direction of the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. You may share condolences/memories at www.potterchapel.com
