My age is nothing under the heavens*
by Ruth Esther Gilmore
(in memory of Richard Donner, 1930-2021)
Some moments I find precious,
caught between two closing doors,
a small flag of cotton moves
as I bend to capture it.
A blink of the eye is not fast enough,
for while I blink, the fog over the sea lifts,
the wall and trees and ducks
take on substantial forms,
the dreamlike quality rubs
its eyes at me, holding a frame of fingers
before my face, pretending
to forge a camera lens, I want to hold this
sight in a shifting moment of agelessness;
my age is nothing under the heavens,
as the sun comes out to run a race.

My wife and I worked for Dick between 1990 and 2015 on Maui. My wife Laura did the bookkeeping for his property and I was the crew on his 26 ft Shamrock "Ka Lalena" which he kept at his house. The Ka Lalena was the boat Danny Glover was always working on in the original Lethal Weapon movie. We took a lot of celebs and family out to Molokini for snorkeling/whale watching etc. What a great guy! Thanks for all the good times. Aloha and mahalo to you Dick for all that you did.

I knew Dick since 1952, when my dad hired him because he had a heart attack. He taught Dick the business of filmmaking and Dick and I stayed close for his whole life. He was the kindest, funniest and most loyal friend a person could have. He has left a giant hole that can never be replaced. Rest on peace my friend

Thoughts about Dick go back to teenage kids together. He was a big kid back then and remained a big kid throughout his life. Same booming voice and robust laughter. A one of a kind sort of guy, to be sure. Many stories could be told about him with friends and family in upper NYS. Fond memories! RIP old buddy!

I am devastated. Yesterday I couldn't believe that Dick had passed away. A man who has given me so much with his films. Dick was like a teacher in my childhood. Through his films I learned about friendship, love and the true meaning of the adventure of growing up.
I will always remember our telephone meeting with great emotion.
My heartfelt condolences to you and the entire Donner's Company family. A lot of strength for these difficult moments.
Words cannot express my sorrow for your loss.
