James Funderburg Obituary
James Michael "Jimbo" Funderburg was born in Whittier, California on December 14,1955 to Jerry and Arlene Funderburg. He passed away on August 25, 2025 in Yuma, Arizona. He had two siblings, John and Judy, "Jude."
During his early childhood years, Jimbo spent as much time as he could on his grandparents cattle ranch and as a result always aspired to be a cowboy. At one point, he owned his own horses, Lucky and Prince.
In 1965 the Funderburg family moved to Stanley, Idaho where they established Jerry's Country Store and Motel. He graduated from Challis High School in 1974 and from Boise State University vocational education mechanics program in 1975. Following that he got a summer job working for Steve Roberts Drilling up Basin Creek and that is where his "tool pusher" (drilling) career began. He served as a foreman for Starner Drilling and drilled oil and natural gas fields in Arizona, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. For a short time, he also worked for the Core of Engineers.
In 1978 Jimbo married Abbra Koehler. The light of his life and much beloved daughter, Zerlena, was born in 1979. After Jimbo and Abbra parted ways in 1980, Jimbo moved back to Stanley to help run Jerry's Country Store.
Jimbo and Jerry were a team, and the store was a popular community hub with many a game of cribbage played around the wood stove during the long winter season. Jimbo eventually bought the store from his Dad. In 1990 he met his second wife, Judy Archbald. They married in 1997. After selling the store in 1999, they spent winters in Yuma, Arizona and summers in Stanley. It was during this time that Jimbo followed his long-time dream of opening Jimbo's Burg-R-Q. He became well known for grilling the best smash burgers this side of the Mississippi with a motto of "If we're not dripping, we're slipping!" When health concerns made it too difficult to continue running "The Q," Jimbo and Judy moved to Yuma full time.
This brief summary of Jimbo's life does not even begin to describe the person he was. Jimbo was a valued member of the Stanley community. He served as a volunteer fireman and as a commissioner for the Sawtooth Valley Rural Fire Department. He was an EMT and driver for Stanley Ambulance and was instrumental in starting the local snowmachine club. He also gave generous support at every opportunity for any and all community events, especially the Stanley School with "The Q's" annual Burgers for Kids fundraiser. He liked to go fast, whether on a snowmobile, a dirt bike or in his 68' Super Bee. He absolutely loved cutting firewood and going catfish fishing. "Go big or stay home" was another favorite motto! Under his sometimes gruff, intimidating exterior was one of the kindest hearts to ever be found. If you were lucky enough to be a family member, or his friend, you were blessed.
Jimbo is preceded in death by his dad, Jerry Funderburg and his brother, John. He is survived by his mother, Arlene, daughter Zerlena and son-in-law Allen, wife, Judy and her three children Todd, Kim and Shannon, sister Jude and brother-in-law Randy, and niece Candy with Mike and Brooks.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 21st, 1:00 - 4:00 at the Mountain Village Resort, Velvet Falls Dance Hall, in Stanley, Idaho.
