Joseph Tiberio Obituary

Joseph (TY) W. Tiberio, 92, of Sherborn, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Malden, MA, he was the son of the late Eliza and Panfilo Tiberio. He was the husband of Faith (Phillips-Kurt) Tiberio of Sherborn. Joseph graduated from Wakefield High School and worked as a machinist prior to enlisting in the Navy. While in the Navy, he was deployed in the Pacific theatre and served as a flight engineer and gunner on a PBY. After flying 50 reconnaissance missions over Okinawa, Saipan and Japan he was stationed in Charleston, SC and trained Navy pilots for the future action in the Pacific. During one training mission to Guantanamo Bay Cuba, he was part of a flight of aircraft that was mysteriously lost while flying over the Bermuda Triangle. Thanks to an invitation to attend a USO dance in St. Augustine, Florida, Joseph met his wife Faith of 68 years. After returning from the war as a decorated veteran, Joseph established his first company, Ty-Car, manufacturing clock hands and radio dials. Two years later Joseph established Century Manufacturing, specializing in precision tool and die and metal stamping. He further broadened his business pursuits and became Director of the Framingham Trust Company and later President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of the Trust Company. Under his leadership and direction, the Trust Company thrived and was acquired by Shawmut National. Joseph was an entrepreneur at heart and established another company, Tywood Corporation, to design and manufacture precision sheet metal solutions. His brother Seth was his long time trusted engineering advisor in all of his manufacturing business endeavors. Joseph's companies are recognized today for world class engineering and innovation, exceptional quality and customer service. Never one to stand pat his companies have branched into designing fiber optic and green solutions. He did business the old fashioned way. Employees were family and business was done on a handshake. Business was his passion, but his life was centered around family, friends and sharing the blessings of his hard work. Whether it be wood working or designing and planting in his Italian Garden, his passion always shined through. Many a student or successful business person owe their start to Joseph's generosity. Joseph was a noted philanthropist to the Arts, Education, Music and Museums. Few would know that he was one of the founders of the Wellesley Friends Quaker Meeting. Through the Joseph W. and Faith K. Tiberio Charitable Foundation he promoted educational and humanitarian endeavors. Besides his wife, he leaves behind a daughter, Faith Dougherty and her husband Daniel of Great Falls, VA.; a brother, Henry Tiberio and his wife Francis of Beverly; daughter-in-law, Linda Tiberio of Blackstone; two sisters-in-law, Kay Burtin of St. Augustine, FL and Mrs.Grace Camelia Cioccia of Holliston; 4 grandchildren: Raymond Tiberio; Harry and his wife Kerrie Tiberio; Faith Feuer and her husband Daniel; and Dakota Dougherty; 3 great-grandchildren: Noah Tiberio, Arielle Feuer, and Samantha Feuer; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one son, Frederick Tiberio and many siblings. Private burial services will be held in the family plot in Pine Hill Cemetery in Sherborn. A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 12th at 3 PM at the Pilgrim Church, 25 South Main St. Sherborn. Following services, all are invited for a tour and refreshments at the Century Tywood Building, 79 Lowland St. in Holliston. Donations in his memory may be made to the Joseph W. and Faith K. Tiberio Charitable Foundation to promote education and humanitarian endeavors, 79 Lowland St. Holliston, MA. 01746. Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston, www.ChesmoreFuneralHome.com

Joe and his wife, Faith, were the first people of authority who ever believed in me. I worked for Joe as teenager 40 years ago. In good times he rewarded his employees with substantial bonuses, and in hard times he never laid anyone off. He taught me that one could be tough and successful and decent and caring -- all at the same time with no inherent discord. Today I teach spacecraft systems engineering, conduct planetary science research, and train astronauts at Brown University. I would not have become who I am today without Joe.

Dear Faith, I am so sorry for your loss. Joe was one of the most influential male role models in my life. I will never forget all he did for myself and my family.
