Barry Ritter

COVINGTON - Barry D. "Doug" Ritter, 81, of Covington, passed away peacefully at 4:58 p.m. Wednesday, September 27, 2023, in the comfort of his home.

He was born January 22, 1942, in Volga, West Virginia to the late Ralph and Edith (Swigart) Ritter.

He married Mary E. Miller December 9, 1972, in Tazwell, Tennessee; and she survives.

Other survivors include four children, Cheryl (Chris) Zimmer of Piqua, Rick (Dawn) Christy of Houston, Ron (Kathy) Christy of Piqua, Sandra (Doug) Hufford of Lakeview; twelve grandchildren, Chris (Sarah) Zimmer, Gina Block, Nicholas (Michelle) Zimmer, Jessica (Benji) Reisenbeck, Shane (Gretchen) Christy, B.J. (Kelsey) McDade, Alysha (Jason) Harris, Johnny McDade, Aaron (Megan) Christy, Ashlee (Josh Sage) Christy, Sheila Mason, Corey (Brenda) Gearheardt; 21 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Lowell (Moina) Ritter of Troy; and a sister, Harriett (Ron) Murphy of Troy.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Neil Ritter, Johnny Ritter; and a sister, Judy Houser.

Mr. Ritter was a 1962 graduate from Piqua Central High School. He went on to serve proudly in the United States Army.

He played Triple A baseball for the Washington Senators and other various teams over the years. Following his baseball career, he worked as an inspector for Hartzell Propellers for 32 years before his retirement. He was an avid history buff and enjoyed reading anything about history. He also enjoyed keeping up with the political climate in our country. Additionally, he loved to mow his grass and tend to his lawn.

He was a huge sports fan and enjoyed following the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, and Ohio State Buckeyes. He also was a lover of animals, especially his beloved cats. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Miami County for their incredible care for Doug and the rest of his family.

A service to honor his life will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2023, at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Stremmel officiating.

Burial will follow at Miami Memorial Park, Covington where full military honors will be provided by the Veterans Elite Tribute Squad.
