Susan Apley
Susan Apley, age 99 of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Huron Medical Care Facility, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on January 3, 1926 in Tokyo, Japan, daughter of the late Hamataro and Ichi (Yuihara) Handa. She married Wilfred Apley on August 21, 1947 in Toyko.
She came to the United States after WWII. After raising her 6 children, she went to work at Huron Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. When her children where in school, she enjoyed sharing her knowledge of her county Japan. She would wear her kimonos and special shoes (Getas). She loved visiting with family and friends and enjoyed bingo, playing cards and dice games, and bird watching. She cherished her trips back to Japan to visit her family there.
Susan is survived by one daughter, Mellie (Bill) Lowery of Greenville, sons, James H. (Rose) Apley of Cass City, David A. (Brenda) Apley of Bad Axe, Roger W. (Hope) Apley of Sandusky and Asa W. (friend Masaka) Apley of Roscommon. 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred Apley, Sr. Her son, Wilfred Apley, Jr. One sister Tokako and other family members from Japan. Also preceded in death by several in-laws.
The family would like to extend a special thank you for the exceptional care she received at Huron Medial Care Facility.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
