ERIC SCHULTZ Obituary

SCHULTZ, ERIC R.Eric R. Schultz, 93, of Cromwell, beloved husband of the late Elizabeth "Liz" (Manning) Schultz died Tuesday March 14, 2017. He was born in Middletown, son of the late Arnold and Mathilda (Pfeiffer) Schultz on September 26, 1923, two weeks after their arrival from Germany. From an early age, Eric found a great joy in sports. He attended the old Woodrow Wilson High School where he lettered three years in football, baseball and basketball. In 1944 he signed a pro-baseball contract with the Hartford Chiefs of the old Eastern League and then signed with the Boston Braves in 1945 until a pitching arm injury. In 1946, Eric left Middletown to attend Long Beach City College in California where he played both football and baseball on championship teams. He then went on to attend University of California at Berkley on a full football scholarship. Eric started his own printing brokerage company in 1976 in Lakewood, CA called Eric R. Schultz, Enterprises, Inc. He and his wife Liz ran the business for twelve years and then retired and moved back to Connecticut, settling in Cromwell. In 1989 he helped organize the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame and was a member of the first group to be inducted in the Hall of Fame. He was very proud of the fact that in December of 1999, he was chosen as one of the nine Middletown, CT 20th Century Athletes. Eric is survived by his son, A.J. Schultz of Cromwell, daughters, Cheryl Stabbert of WA, Cathy Parker of CA, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Liz, he was predeceased by his son, Eric Schultz, Jr., brother, Arnold Schultz and sister, Erna Schultz. His Funeral Liturgy will be held on Monday March 20th at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St. Middletown. It's been a long time since Eric has called either in Connecticut or in Florida just to talk sports- Cal sports. He was a bigger than life man, and I met him through my husband who tried his best to save Eric's beloved Liz . Eric and I became buddies through the Cal connection. So the internet explains why I've not heard from Eric. I shall miss him so very much- especially when Cal is playing Stanford. My 50th college reunion is this October, and like 10 years ago, I will make a point of visiting the statue of Eric's coach, Pappy Waldron; there I shall whisper a prayer of thanksgiving for the great gift of being counted amongst Eric's friends. To Eric's family, I am so very sorry for your great loss of your Dad, but like you, I picture him joyfully re-united with Liz- and his teammates. George Ann Bardenheier

Dear Dad, A month has gone by, but this is a happy day. You and Liz are together for her birthday today. You always were a man with a plan! This makes me so happy.
Much love to you both. ❤ You know how much I miss you.
Hugs and kisses to both of you...xoxoxoxo from a grateful daughter.

So today I was driving down the road and saw some newly sprouted daffodils, which reminded me of Eric. In the late 90s Eric and Liz came to our house to spend Easter. They arrived with the most wonderful bouquet of fresh cut daffodils. Ever since, daffodils have reminded me of them both. That sighting of the flowers and an approaching Easter made me think of Eric, which then prompted an internet search. We are sorry to learn of the passing of a really good guy. We will toast a gimlet and remember.

Dear Dad...I cannot tell you how many times I've picked up the phone to call you. I miss our daily talks and all the advice you gave me. I know you're happy, but it feels as though you took a piece of my heart with you. The tears roll silently down my cheeks every night. I miss you so much. I know I'll write more as time goes by. It makes me feel closer to you. I will always live by your motto of 'It's a great life if you don't weaken'. I promise you, I will not weaken.
Love always, ❤❤

Dearest Eric...you are sorely missed all the wisdom and advice you gave shored up our lives and now we are becoming the rear-guard. You left a really big act to follow, something we don't feel up to. But now you have wings and can keep watch over us. I hope you and mom are together. love Cheryl

RIP Eric Schultz

March 17, 2017

To the family of Eric,
It has been a pleasure and an honor to have been able to take care of Eric over the past year. I had the opportunity to share many sports stories with him at length, and looked up his history of so many accolades. My son plays football at CCSU and Eric asked about him daily. "How's my boy?", he would ask when he saw me. My son came in and spent a couple of hours with Eric to share their sports stories. Such a pleasure for my son & Eric. He will be missed dearly. Thank you for allowing us to care of him and become a part of his life.
