Lorraine Rizzo Obituary

Lorraine Althea Sanborn Rizzo
On May 13th, at the age of 96, Lorraine Althea Sanborn Rizzo passed away. She was born in Portland, Connecticut to Bertha (Stemmler) and Frank Leslie Sanborn. While in high school, Lorraine attended a surprise birthday party for a sailor in Middletown. There she met the guest of honor, Joseph S. Rizzo, who later became her lifelong husband. They built a home in Portland where they lovingly raised four daughters. Lorraine often commented that it was not easy raising children in the 1960s! However, she was a wonderful role model and committed mother who valued education. Whenever the opportunities arose, she introduced her daughters to cultural events and performances. During their many East Coast camping excursions, they often took day trips to museums.
In retirement, Lorraine and Joe built a lovely Cape Cod home in Niantic where she could be seen in her sun hat working in her gardens. She joined the East Lyme Garden Club and volunteered at the Niantic Prison for Women teaching gardening skills. A Master Gardener, she also ran a landscape consulting business. She read widely, listened to classical music, played bridge with friends, and enjoyed sitting in her sunroom watching the birds. Her family visited often and she welcomed them with an open heart. Her motto was, "Come anytime!"
Lorraine and Joe transitioned into assisted living in Wilton where they enjoyed being together during their final years. When Joe passed away, Lorraine missed him and often expressed her desire to be with him again. However, she found joy in watching birds from her bedroom windows and continued to welcome all who came to visit with her cheerful, gracious smile.
Friends may call at Portland Funeral Home, 231 Main Street on Monday, May 20th from 5 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 21st at 10 o'clock, at Saint Mary's Church, 45 Freestone Avenue, Portland. At the request of the family, the burial will be private.

Aunt Lorraine, I always saw you as a "classy woman" who was very proper The fact that my beautiful mother and you looked so much alike, made me feel even closer to you as a child!
I pray your family finds peace in their hearts during this extremely difficult time in their lives! I feel your pain. Just think how ecstatic she must have been when she saw Uncle Joe again!!
