Paul Bengston Obituary

Paul E. Bengston
Paul E Bengston, age 75, of Colchester CT, passed away on April 8th 2023 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. Paul was born in Hartford, CT on November 29th 1947 and grew up in Portland, CT. The oldest son of Oscar and Madeline Bengston, Paul was followed by his predeceased brother David, and now survived by brother Peter (wife Lori), sister Dawn (husband Russell Woodward) and sister-in-law Bonnie Decarli.
Paul's life and memory will also live on through his wife Susanne and his two sons, Stephen (Spouse Karisa) and Ryan. Paul's memory will also live through his grandson Cru and Paul's numerous nieces including Laura, daughter of Peter and nephews, including Josh and Justin, sons of David. Paul would want more than anything to be remembered as a man who truly loved his family.
Paul served two tours in the Vietnam War with the United States Marine Corps. After Vietnam, Paul took numerous jobs, including that with the Portland Police Department and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection until finally accepting a position with the town of Portland, where he served as the Director of Buildings and Grounds until his retirement after more than 40 years.
Paul was an avid fisherman who held a United States Coast Guard Captains license. He was a skilled carpenter and lover of ice cream. Paul was a great friend to all and loved to make people laugh with his constant stories and humor.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 22 at 10:30am in the Swedish Cemetery, Portland. Friends may call at the Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main Street, Portland on Friday, April 21 from 4-7pm.

Dear Susanne, Ryan and family, we are so sorry to hear about the passing of Paul. He was a GREAT man, friend and Scouter. Paul was a much respected member of the Oddfellows Stephen Terry Lodge # 59, a very old charitable organization formerly located in Portland. Paul joined Stephen Terry on October the 6th, 2014, earned the 3rd degree, and the trust of the his brother lodgemates. His dedication and hard work were not unnoticed, and he was voted to hold the position of treasurer , a position he held to the last. Stephen Terry inherited the stewardship of Camp Connecticut , located in Hebron ct, on whose board of directors Paul was a member, as it´s financial secretary as well. I can say Paul gained my respect when it chanced to fall to me to help write our annual reports, and I realized the integrity of his book keeping, twice we were able to report to the penny, and other years were nearly as close.
His stories, his laugh, his black truck pulling into the drive, we his brothers at Stephen Terry will miss Paul , and honor his memory.
Our deepest condolences to the Bengston Family , and yours in Friendship, Love and Truth, Frank Renner, and Stephen Terry lodge# 59

Hi Ryan.
Met your dad in 1989 while selling Snap-on Tools at the Biz. He had been a VERY good friend ever since. Even trimmed some trees at your house. Maybe they need trimming again. I'll ask him.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the Bengston family. Paul was very dedicated to the town and Board of Education as he performed his responsibilities as supervisor of buildings and grounds. As the high school principal I enjoyed our working relationship along with all of the support he provided. Unfortunately I am unable to attend services because I just experienced heart failure and will be undergoing surgery on Thursday. May he Rest In Peace and join his brother in heaven.
