Richard Gotta Obituary
Richard "Dickie" Gotta, 70, of Portland, passed away (after a brief illness) on Friday, September 30, 2022. Born November 12, 1951, in Middletown, CT, he was the son of the late Robert Gotta, Sr. and Helen Gotta. Dickie graduated from Portland High School in 1970 and dedicated his life's work to Gotta's Farm Stand, a multigenerational family farm, established by his great-grandfather in 1898. Dickie first worked alongside his father, his mother, and then his wife and children, passing on his extensive experience and knowledge of farming to his children.
Dickie is survived by his wife Jackie and their children Elizabeth and R.J. of Portland; son Chris Gotta; grandson Ian Gotta; and his brother Robert (Bobby) Gotta, Jr., and his companion Linda Gajevski of Woodbury; and many other family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday ( October 6 ) at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 51 Freestone Avenue, Portland followed by burial at St. Mary cemetery Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St., Portland. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in Dickie's memory be sent to CT Farm Bureau, 78 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield, CT 06109.

To Jackie, RJ, Elizabeth and Chris,
Bill and I were so sad to hear of Dickie´s passing. He was a wonderful friend and classmate. We loved visiting the stand and the Farmer´s Market early Saturday spring mornings, always hoping to see him and his buddy, David. We traveled to CT after we moved to MA to stock up on corn and scones. We even on occasion had to pack our luggage with corn if our travel destination was FL. Dickie will never be forgotten. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

We are so sorry to hear of Dicky´s passing. He truly was one of a kind and a wonderful friend to so many. Carl loved seeing him and "Bruce" every morning early when they both were headed out to work. Ashley loved working for Him and enjoyed working with Ronnie. I couldn´t wait for his corn and even questioned Vigianni´s in Westbrook to make sure his corn was Dicky´s. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have enjoyed going to the Regional Farmers Market in Hartford several times in the season with children and now grandchildren.
We are always delighted with the service and more so seeing ad talking with the Jamaican who are here yearly to work on the Farm.
My children from the Daycare have learnt a great deal at the North End Farmer´s Market when the truck comes weekly with warm, helpful staff.

In the old days my Mom Jennie Gotta Kane, Dickie's aunt, my dad Jim, sister Beverly, and I lived across the street from the " stand". We also helped run it. Dickie's father Robbie, his mom Helen and he did the planting and picking and we did the selling. It was a family operation. Dickie continued this with his family, Jackie, R.J. and Elizabeth, friends and Jamaican workers who were family to him also. My sister and I have always looked forward to seeing my cousin in the barn, eating his delicious food and drinking hard cider before noon! So sorry and sad. It is a loss for us all.

After 10 years, working for Dickie, I enjoyed transplanting in the main green houses with my Jamacin friends, Alvin, Ronnie,Denny, and dezmine, and my right arm girl Lanie Guild! So many special memories, and Helen Gotta would join us In the greenhouses transplanting. She always had a story to tell us. Lots of laughs and hard work. But I enjoyed it all!!! I used to work at the QP market on RT 66 in Portland. I remember Dick and I would get in a argument about the tomatoes, I would put out for seconds!!! He told me I was to picky about the tomatoes! He was a great guy! To work for ! He was filled with a lot of knowledge, I learned a lot working for him! Although I had to stop working because of my back surgeries and was not able to return. I held all the memories inside me! Thank you Dickie for all your wisdom and friendship!! You will be missed RIP

Dickie has been my friend for a long time. There was never a day he didn´t ask about my husband. When Tom died he gave me a beautiful tree. He was the most generous man ever.
