Upon his return home, he served as temporary assistant at St. Aedan Parish in New Haven, CT. That same year he was assigned as Resident Chaplain at the Rocky Hill State Veterans Home and Hospital, where he served as Chaplain for 24 years. While serving at the Veterans Home and Hospital Father Berberich began their alcohol rehabilitation program. He also worked with Veterans who suffered from PTSD. He continued his Military career serving as the 43rd Brigade Chaplain of the 26th Infantry Division of the Connecticut National Guard in Hartford. In 1990, he was recalled to active duty where he was stationed at Fort Bragg in support of Operation Desert Storm, and in 2001 retired from the Connecticut National Guard with the rank of Brigadier General. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, serving many years as their Chaplain, and in 2012 was inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame.
He was also Pastor at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New Britain from 1992 until 1997. In 1997 he began the final chapter of his service in the church when he was named as Pastor of the Sacred Heart Church in Kent. He retired as Pastor Emeritus of Sacred Heart Church on August 12, 2013.

I bought a car from Father Berberich. I had to chase him down to pay him. He said "make a donation to a Veteran's charity. I made a donation to Navy and Marine Corps Relief (I had benefited from their efforts) in the name of Colonel Thomas Berberich. He was less than thrilled.
You will need to search to find a better man than Father Berberich.

I always called him my Uncle Father Tom. I was happy to be at the last reunion he held, it was a really special happy day. When I look at this picture he looks so much like my dad. I am blessed to be part of his family. Cindy Nesline

A wonderful human being and so blessed to have known him. My fondest memory of Father Tom is when he would sit at the bottom of his driveway cheering on the runners at the Annual Kent Pumpkin Run!! I looked forward to my bear hug every year.

My most poignant memory of Fr. Beriberich is from his eulogy for my father, Dr. Maurice Reidy Jr. They were fast friends from their time in the National Guard. He stepped down from the alter and spoke directly to our family of nine children. He was a kind presence in our lives through that difficult day and beyond.

Father Berberich was an amazing source of spiritual comfort and companionship to my father, the Rev. Richard Dunne, who was a patient at Rocky Hill Veterans home from 1975 to 1988. He knew how to bolster my father´s spirit when he would get down due to his rapid decline from MS, that cut his time short as a father, husband and minister to his own congregation. He had such a way with the 4 of us, as we were such young children (6 to 12 yrs old) when my father was admitted. He was kind, he asked questions and really listened to us, and I remember his wonderful smile & laugh. He was there for my father as he passed away, and it was such a comfort to see him at my dad´s funeral. He was a wonderful person and we all hold his memory close to our hearts. My sincere condolences to his family and friends, we are all truly blessed to have known him.

My father and Father Berberich became close friends serving in the CT National Guard together. In 1974, my father died suddenly and Father Berberich became a constant, warm, comforting presence in the lives of myself, my eight brothers and sisters, and our mother. He spent time with us on holidays, at family celebrations, and was a regular at pizza Sunday at our house. Father was the presiding officer at my sister's promotion to Colonel and spoke at my mother's memorial years later. It is impossible to describe how important Father was to us and how much his kindness, empathy, humor, and strength influenced our lives. We are grateful to have known him and to have shared a place in his amazing life.

I had no idea what a great man Father Berberich was and how many people he helped when he came to our church, St. Francis in New Britain. God truly has an angel in heaven. He helped my sister when she lost her husband at an early age to a heart attack. They were with the National Guard, CT and FL. We all sang a lot of patriotic songs at church when he said the mass. It was very inspiring and uplifting. He gave very good masses. I am so sorry. A real saint for sure. Thank you Father Berberich for helping so many people especially the Vietnam veterans and for giving and suffering for what you saw and endured. God bless you and your family.

To the family of BGEN (CH) Thomas Berberich, USA, CTARNG, Ret-
On behalf of myself and the Riel/Pelletier family formerly of Woodstock, CT, I extend my condolences on the passing of an honorable man/priest, BGEN (CH) Thomas Berberich, USA, CTARNG. Fr Berberich we knew back in 1984 when he was the chaplain at the Connecticut Soldiers Home & Hospital, Rocky Hill, CT, where my late uncle, Edward Couchon Sr lived in elder years and Fr Berberich was a comfort and a reconnection to my Uncle Ed at the end of his life then, as his son and namesake, CPL Edward Couchon Jr, USMC, of Little Ferry, NJ, was killed in action in the 6th Marine Division on Okinawa. Fr Berberich remains a special part of my family history and will never be forgotten and his memory will remain etched in my mind for eternity. Fr Berberich, may your service to your family, the Archdiocese of Hartford, CT, your state and nation be rewarded in life everlasting. Respectfully submitted-

Father Tom was a true messenger of God and led his life always in goodness and kindness. He was an inspiration to all who were blessed to have known him and to those of us who were family. He will be received by our Lord Jesus Christ with open arms and once again be with his Earthly family and friends. Hope they have a big fishing spot all set up for him. Love Father Tom and you will always be in my thoughts, prayers and heart.

Father Tom was not only the best cousin ever as well as the kindest, most understanding and spiritual inspiration our family and the world could ever ask for. He was a true and faithful disciple and servant of God. His example is something we can only hope to follow. He never forgot a name nor would you leave without a hug, spreading the warmth of our Lord Jesus Christ thru all of us. Rest in peace and enjoy the rewards in Heaven with your Heavenly Family. We love you and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers forever.

I have a memory of Father Berberich visiting my Dad at the nursing home he was in, placing a Red Sox cap on his head as it was his favorite team & giving him last rites just before he passed. May God Bless both my Dad & Father as they are both in Heaven now.

I met Father Berberich in Vietnam. I cannot forget when he gave me holy communion at Mass. While in the church, I also met one of my former students in church who followed me as much as he was able. I never forgot the two years that that I served in Vietnam. I never forgot Father Berberich and the wonderful person that he was.
