LOIS GUERIN Obituary

Lois Guerin, 90, of St. Louis, Mo., lost her life to cancer Nov. 5, 2009.
She was born Aug. 22, 1919, in Chicago, to John and Margaret "Nana" Nordberg.
Lois was a graduate of Loretto High School in Chicago. Lois' passion in life was her large family, having seven children, nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was always the centerpiece that held her family together. Lois lost her father and only sister before she was 8 years old and her husband of 30 years of marriage at the age of 50, and a son when he was only 19 years old. She was raised by her mother during the Depression in poverty, but her enduring determination, heroic courage and radiant positive approach to life itself enabled her to reach all of her life-long dreams.
She was proud of the fact that all of her children and grandchildren attended college and all so far have become professionals – two teachers, two businessmen, a chef, a police officer, and two served the country in Vietnam. She was a woman ahead of her time. She played women's basketball in the Catholic CYO League while in high school. She swam, biked and shot baskets with all the neighborhood children. She wanted every child to take full advantage of all the opportunities available to them, for in her youth she had few.
She was always a constant beacon of hope, encouragement, positive re-enforcement, cheerfulness and joy for any child who was lucky enough to enter her world. Her past-times were reading, gardening, and most of all sitting in the bleachers watching her family and extended family's children play sports.
Lois worked until she was 78 years old. Her primary purpose in life was to be productive, contribute and to fill all of those she touched, with joy and happiness. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by three sons, William (Patricia) Guerin III of Larkspur, Colo., Michael (Cynthia) Guerin of Lake George, Colo., and Thomas Guerin of Duluth, Minn.; three daughters, Bonnie (Scot) Hickman and Kathleen (Marc) Poppe, both of St. Louis, Mo., and Patricia "Paddy" Guerin of Duluth, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Vera; husband of 30 years, William Guerin Jr.; and son, James Guerin.
Per her request, she will be cremated, with no service. Memorial donations to the Humane Society of Missouri, Salvation Army or a charity of the donor's choice.

Dear Lois's Family:

I live next door to your families and Lois's house on South Shore Drive and fondly remember many teas and conversations with her. I spent many evenings with Miss Eldred and Lois talking about the neighborhood, pets and trees. I am happy that she was able to spend many lovely years with her family and I am sure that you will miss her. My thoughts are with you.

Dear Guerin Family,
It is with my deepest symathy on the loss of your mom Lois that I write this entry. I remember like it was yesterday when Tom brought me to Crystal Lake to meet Lois,,,I was a nervous wreck. Lois had a way of making me feel welcomed and then as years pasted, I felt like a part of the family. I will never forget the time that Tom and I went to Crystal Lake in the fall to helped your mom rake leaves and then Lois plopped into the big pile of leaves. We laughed till our tummys hurt. I have alot of great memories of Lois and the whole family that I will alway treasure. May God comfort all of you and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Donna Bartel

You young'uns are well remembered and your mom was a very special lady. God Bless

Lois is a beautiful person. She radiates joy here and now in heaven.
I remember Lois baby sitting my brothers and me when we lived on Stuart about a block away from Loretto when she was a basketball star. We looked forward to her caring for us. Later she married my cousin,Billy. We have fantastic memories from Knootz Lake.
Our prayers are with all of you that God will comfort you.

To the families of Mrs. Guerin,
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to each and every one of you as you adjust to the loss of a special woman. My memories go way back to when she was pregnant (like all of the time). She always had this
radiance about her. I am sure she was hidding a halo or two. I remember my mother's friendship with her. Your family has always been very special to me and you are all held up in prayer at this time.
Love, Susan Japuntich Huether

My deepest sympathies to all the Guerin family. I was a young boy when the Guerins moved away from South 2nd St in DeKalb. I remember Tom the best as we played together & climbed up their next door neighbor's Mrs. Anderson's pear trees to eat her pears in the summers. I also remember Mr. Guerin. Mrs. Guerin was always so nice to us all. I remember all the Guerin kids & how all their cars were parked out on the street with all their friends & comings & goings. Its been 45 yrs & I still remember what a nice family & how disappointed we all were to see them move away.

When I think of my Grandma Guerin I will remember her with a smile on her face! She always said that all her dreams came true in her life. She loved her family, and loved kids! She never seemed like an "old lady" to me. She was my "brown haired" Grandma who was so active! You were one of a kind!
Love you, and miss you!!

Lois was a big part of my life as a young child. Bill and I were best of friends and still are. If we weren't meeting at my house then we were at the Guerin's. Lois was always there greeting us with that great smile and some kind of compliment or encouraging word. I know this is a difficult time for the Guerin family but it is also a time to remember and celebrate the life of a great wife, wonderful mother and just a really nice person. We were all blessed to have her be a part of our lives.

Paddy,

It is with great sadness that I've learned of the passing of your mom.

Pat Sullivan wrote me through face book tonight to share your sad news.

I have found memories of her, I remember Christmas morning and watching Saturday night live. And helping fix up the bathroom.

You might not remember this but you mom gave me an extension cord for helping out.
I still have and use it every week to mow the lawn every time I use it I think of your mom. The thought of her great manacotti and powdered milk.

I hope you and your family are celebrating her life and all that she brought to so many near and far, she really was wonderful.

I'll miss her, as I do you.

How well and how fondly I remember Lois and Bill Guerin. Lois was a lovely, happy lady who shared Catholic Daughter membershop with our Mother. Bill Sr. was always the gentleman as teen-age girls tried on endless shoes at Malone's. The Guerin family had a rebirth for me when our good friends Pat and Gary McCabe purchased the South Second Street home. And I know for certain that Bill Jr. and my brother, John, have many stories to tell. Peace at last for a very dear lady. Pat (Moore) Sauter

Paddy,
Your Mom always made me feel welcome at your home when we used to hang out there so many years ago. She made the best manicotti. I'm sure you have many happy memories.

Lois and I were friends from 1966 when we arrived in Crystal Lake until she moved to be with family. She was a big part of our family's celebrations after she moved over by the lake. She and I often sat in the same bleachers watching Paddy and my Kathy, Dianne and Teresa play various sports. We often rode together to away games for Marian. She was there for me when I lost my husband Jack in '93 and we would go out to breakfast after Church on Sunday mornings. I have missed her over the years she has been away, but know how much she loved being with her family.

I was good friends with Jim in our neighborhood on South Second Street in Dekalb back in the 60's. We lived across the street and had a whole neighbor full of kids and remember playing kick the can with Jim and all the other kids.

I've known Lois since I was 4 years old. The Guerin and Henigan families lived only a block from each other. Our lives were intertwined with kids sports, St. Mary's events, school, and marriage. She was a wonderful Mother-In-Law to me, a special grandmother to our children and her great-grandchildren. She loved coming to Colorado to watch all the kid's sporting events, and would sit in the bleachers for hours watching the girls play softball. We will all miss her and envy the 90 years of quality life she had with her family. Pat (Henigan) Guerin
